(3,158 posts)The entries were all amazing this month. George, I really loved "Cat's Ear." I was going to vote for it, but you were beating me too badly, so I voted for myself.
I'd like to share a few more shots with you of this wonderful old fire engine. I found it in a small park in the tiny town of Three Rivers, California, not far from the southern entrance to Sequoia National Park. What first caught my attention was the unusual placement of the pumping mechanism on the front of the truck, where it was probably taking it's power off the engine. I had never seen this configuration before. My guess is that this vehicle probably belonged to a volunteer fire department, and perhaps this design was less expensive than a traditional fire engine. The second element that caught my attention was the old fender mounted siren. I loved how the gleaming chrome contrasted with the lovely weathered patina of the rest of the truck, as well as the rusted red light right next to it. Also note that there was only room for two in the front seat, so the rest of the firefighters were no doubt hanging off the rear of the vehicle. The sign on the front door says "Van Buren TWP" which I believe is a small town in Michigan, so I'm not sure how it found its way to the mountains of California.
I hope you find it as beautiful as i did. This truck earned its place of honor in the local park.

(25,816 posts)But the photo you submitted is more artistic, I think, than the overall view. The subtle faded colors,
dappled by age, and the shiny siren as the focus appealed to me immediately.
All of the photos were great (there is so much talent exhibited in these contests) and congrats to all,
but your photo got my vote, and not just because I'm a grumpy old man too.

(3,158 posts)That is exactly what I was going for with this image. It was impossible not to notice this beautiful old siren. I "zoomed with my feet," getting closer to it to capture the exquisite detail in the chrome. It wasn't until I had a chance to review the images that I really began to appreciate the patina of the weathered truck body, and I wanted to bring that out in the processing. I tend to strive for clarity and detail in my photos, and I can look at this image all day and not get tired of it.
I did some research on the siren, trying to learn a little of its history. The siren is a model 2QB, made by the Federal Signal Company. For many years it was the standard for fire engines, both for its sound and its durability. Apparently one of its most redeeming qualities is that it never froze in cold weather. Federal Signal started making sirens in the early 1900s, but they advertise this model as being fifty years old, so it's possible that this isn't the original siren. If this wasn't the original, it is probably still very old, and the original was probably similar in design.
Thanks again! Much appreciated.

I not only saw part of an antique fire engine, but a fire engine that is part of a historical heritage of motorized firefighting.
