MIAMI (Reuters) - Tropical cyclone Sandy revved back up to hurricane strength on Saturday as it churned toward the U.S. northeast coast where it threatens to become one of the worst storms in decades.
The late-season storm has been dubbed "Frankenstorm" by some weather watchers because it will combine elements of a tropical cyclone and a winter storm and is forecast to reach the U.S. coast close to Halloween.
Forecast models show it will have all the ingredients to morph into a so-called "super storm."
Governors in states along the U.S. East Coast declared emergencies on Friday, with officials urging residents to stock up on food, water and batteries. .................(more)

(14,881 posts)to check out a little cottage on 10 acres of woods and pastures, with a spring-fed stream, southeast frontage behind, bay views. On the market for much less than I *should* be able to get for my place. And part of a blue, "transition country" as I plan for my own transition.
Guess that will have to wait for a better week as well! Global warming is coming faster than I can go, dammit!!!!!

(4,214 posts)I'd just take a blue area at this point. But a cottage/stream/woods/bay views - wow. I so hope you can get it! Good luck and safe travels on your future trip. I wish you well.

(14,881 posts)I'll believe it when I see it. The cottage may well be on the brink of collapse. It's amazing how much pix can hide, lol!
I'm in the red armpit of my region, so I definitely feel your pain!

(9,874 posts)and a few years before that another blizzard in the first week of November so it is not terribly unusual. The northeast gets a lot of "noreasters" that don't get a lot of news but are almost as damaging as hurricanes or tropical storms.

(9,874 posts)Generator is full of gas plus 2 five gallon cans of extra gas, should keep us going for at least a few days should power go out. Fuel stabilizer used just in case it's a false alarm. Last year's October blizzard left us without power for almost 5 days so I am not taking any chances this time. Flashlights, batteries and candles (I love the aroma of Yankee Candles) ready too (along with electric space heater used only if absolutely necessary so I don't drain generator/gas too fast. Car gas tank topped. Flashlights all accounted for (plus batteries). Lawn furniture moved to garage along with barbecue grill (blew over last year and the lid cracked in half).
Forget bottled water - stores already cleaned out, but beer ready and accounted for. We are generally OK with these storms in Bergen County, the farthest northeastern county in NJ, with downed trees and power outages the most we usually see. However, the same cannot be said of the shore areas - Cape May on the South to Asbury Park in the north (home of The Boss) are going to get pounded the worst.

(9,874 posts)and if so probably no TV or cable. I thought about doing that last year when we lost power for almost 5 days (I was lucky enough to find a generator the 2nd day) but those motels with power jacked their prices up way too high.
