General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI have come to the conclusion, looking at the insane, woman-hating bills coming
out (MO being top of the list today), that the people demanding and writing these bills are reincarnations of those who tortured and killed women during the Burning Times. They did not get us all then, though Goddess knows they tried, and it looks like they are back to finish the job.
All the patriarchal, murdering, hate-filled christofascists thugs can go fuck themselves. They know that their numbers are waning, this is their last-ditch effort to exert control, or burn it all down. May they receive everything they deserve.

Trouble making, spiteful, insecure women not allowed. We all know who they are, just listen. I minute will reveal how they are.

(58,785 posts)Those it does resonate with are already very firm in their views. The job is to convince more relatively uninvolved people that they need to keep abortion legal.
An alternative might be to now and then comment that at least genetic testing and modern life mean men are being tracked down and forced to support unintended babies. And the impetus to force them to would INCREASE dramatically if women were denied choice. Someone would have to support the close to a million being aborted every year.
If barred from abortion, at least far fewer women -- and their parents and other relatives -- would be bearing the entire burden of raising these children alone. Some fathers would want custodial involvement since they're paying, others needing financial assistance. In any case, this would affect the families on both sides.

(1,594 posts)I'm watching what's happening in Florida with Disney. Disney OWNS Central Florida, and what they don't own, most of the other major studios do. Iger's retired from the board, but from multiple comments he's made lately, I think he's pushing the current CEO to take the fight directly to DeSantis.
That's what the christofascists don't want to understand: they are playing to their base of aging MAGAts, but too many corporations are getting fed up with having to deal with the headaches that these guys are causing, and it's going to start translating into campaigns to get these extremists out of office.

(21,146 posts)most outrageous abortion bills, I suspect that a lot of funding is coming from the Catholic Church. Evangelicals are aligned with them ideologically, but not always to the point of absolutely no abortions no matter what. That absolutist position sounds like Catholicism has a hand in the funding and origin of these bills.
Irish_Dem
(45,215 posts)abortion, it is it is hot button red meat for the base. GOP does fund raising and get votes on the abortion issue.
We know that Putin deliberately stirs up social division and chaos, so probably some Russian money too.
It would actually be quite interesting to see exactly who is funding which GOP issues.

(25,684 posts)My very best friend in the whole world, who here I will call Michael (not his actual name) is a practicing Catholic. I was raised Catholic, and started questioning Catholicism and its many beliefs and practices from a very early age.
My friend Michael in general terms opposes abortion, but over the years has come to understand that one rule isn't good enough. He recognizes that his opposition isn't a universal, and understands that abortion is sometimes the best thing.
He and I often have conversations about such things as abortion. We are not totally on the same page, but in the end he gets that individual choice really matters.
Alas, too many who totally oppose abortion don't get the individual choice thing.

(3,364 posts)It appears to me that the power of the Christofascists is on the rise. They may be on the verge of assuming autocratic power in our country. They dominate the Supreme Court. They have leverage in national elections by virtue of the Electoral College, gerrymandering, a dedicated propaganda network, legalized bribery, and voter suppression.
Far from waning power, the axis of radical Christians, racists, and the ultra-wealthy is crushing civil liberties, impoverishing workers, and concentrating wealth like never before in history.
Women are mearly pawns and collateral damage in this war.

I keep meeting youth lately here at work who are full on MAGAt's, and figuring I can possibly reason with them, relatively open to discussion. I can make some strides but I'm up against the mindlock of
FOX NEWS TALKING POINTS.
There's one for every possible sensible viewpoint, to stop all discussion because of "Cancel Culture" or "Socialism" fears or "Free Dumbs".
Not that their viewpoint makes any damn sense at all: they just reiterate what's been brainwashed into them.

(58,785 posts)now and will continue. That doesn't mean there haven't always been setbacks, and right now the LOSERS are emboldened and empowered by the negligence of those who believe in equality.
But we are the giant force they've always raged against but can't stop. The Enlightenment, Ages of Reason and Science, Industrial Revolution, all the revolutions since, including Medical, are all on the side of equality.
Thanks to the majorities' stupidity in allowing them to get power, they're having a serious moment -- extremism has taken control of the right -- but they always lose in the end. Remember reaction? And that half the right are women and others men who care about women, and about having their own right to choice? Their extremism is not just taking them farther than most conservatives ever expected themselves to go, the ones who really would burn women are going way too far.
It wouldn't hurt if more people here realized that. I see very little insight on this thread and a great deal of silly, fearful hand-wringing and demonization of ordinary people at a level worthy of anything the right can produce.

We should not be surprised. Every decent American with a conscience must remain vigilant in combating their continued efforts to undermine the forward movement of equality and justice. We outnumber them and we must always work to overpower them, and keep them at bay, evil never takes a holiday.

(46,008 posts)Any woman knows banning an ectopic pregnancy isn't "saving a baby." It's just enforcing celibacy, not that that ever works. But I hope those legislators' wives practice it until their husbands cut the shit.
BTW, just as a tiny aside, women weren't burned in this country. They were hanged and sometimes tortured first.

(5,490 posts)I millennials and Gen z are not going to tolerate this, I don't think. I also think they will end up with a younger version of Bernie as their political leader. I'm not sure who that is. But I think there will be a dynamic shift in the country.
The white supremacist feel emboldened right now. But the more the show themselves, the more they turn off the middle of the road voters.
My 18 year old doesn't particularly like the Democratic Party. Her views are far left of mine (I'm a Clinton Democrat). But she thinks the deck was stacked against Bernie getting the nomination.

(10,034 posts)There is absolutely no scientific evidence or that abortions hurt anyone. Mother nature is constantly creating situations where abortions ocurr on their own. There is no evidence that fetuses or zygotes feel anything like a human. In fact they look very much like fishes. And they probably feel like fishes.
There is no guarantee this zygote or fetus will develop fully into a viable baby. There are numerous interventions to keep the fetus alive if something goes wrong. But these idiots don't object to that sort of medical interference with the development of the fetus. Just don't end the pregnancy to make a woman's life better, richer, healthier. Only men can escape the pain and suffering of child birth once that zygote grows a tail.
There are no scientific or medical reasons to prevent abortions. The only reasons to prevent most abortions are religious.
Of course there are many reasons to want to have babies and children. They are personal and private. Not reasons to dictate through religious laws what every woman should do.
