Wars.

COVID
Insurrection.
Then inflation and gas prices...
Now food shortages.
The 21st Century sucks.
Thanks Vlad!
"Its going to be real, Biden said at a news conference in Brussels. The price of the sanctions is not just imposed upon Russia. Its imposed upon an awful lot of countries as well, including European countries and our country as well.
Ukraine and Russia are both major producers of wheat, in particular, and Kyivs government has already warned that the countrys planting and harvest have been severely disrupted by the war.

(1,898 posts)I don't think food shortages will be great in the US.
Europe will undoubtedly suffer more. Yes it sucks - but
Putin started this shit show.

(14,721 posts)And export a lot as well.
Prices will certainly go up as global buyers compete for available harvests. No doubt us producers will sell to the highest bidders which may be foreign markets.
We will have food, but prices will be high and selection low. The poor will really suffer since food banks will get far less.
Fertilizer prices are already way up. Fuel is way up. That alone will drive prices up.

(9,240 posts)...they're owned and controlled by the big polluters. THink Joe Manchin on STEROIDS. NOTHING changes because of them. Renewables have been available, affordable, possible for decades. INSTEAD, we keep propping up big oil, fossil fuel companies with gargantuan subsidies, they make enormous profits and pay zero taxes.
"Nothing man can do" is bullshit. Absolute bullshit.
WarGamer
(12,437 posts)No... it's inevitable.
It's take a LOOOONG post for me to make my case BUT I'll give you a summary.
CO2 emissions are growing at an uncontrolled rate. Any reductions in CO2 emissions are being FAR surpassed by increases in different parts of the world.
No amount of Chevy Volts or Solar Panels can change that.
We're done.
Palm trees in the polar circle by 2100.
We, as a human species need to start PREPARING today.
WarGamer
(12,437 posts)Time to PREPARE for a different future.
WarGamer
(12,437 posts)But they will do VERY little and are NOT a solution.
Like i said... for every % of reduction in CO2 emissions from a Western Country, 3X that amount is being produced by China, India and African nations MORE than the previous year.

(36,294 posts)The effects of climate change will not be uniform around the world. Some regions will be devasted, others won't be so bad and there will be areas that will become more suitable for human habitation.
If one's plan to deal with the effects of climate change is to not do anything and accept death, I see no rational reason to be worried about events taking place today.
WarGamer
(12,437 posts)And you're right, time to prepare society for a much different future.
Plan WHERE agriculture will prosper in 20 years, build cities and infrastructure to handle the massive coming needs, etc...
I'm VERY much in support of preparing. But I also realize that green energy and whatever is like finding an extra box of sponges on the Titanic while she's sinking.

(12,437 posts)But.
There is NO NEED to escalate. The Ukrainians are (depending on definitions) WINNING the war already.
The Russians will be ready for a humiliating peace deal soon...
IMHO, this war is the end of Putin. One way or another, maybe he is granted asylum in China on a 1000 acre Mountain hideout... or whatever...
But within a few years (or sooner), Russia will have a moderate leader and grow closer to the EU.
And just a reminder, humankind has a history of "might being right" and "big guys rules" and those such things. They aren't changing because they're human nature.
Even in social democracies, there is ample unfairness and bias. It's a human thing.

(9,137 posts)Yes, it can.
However, the costs and consequences must be considered.
Would you be willing to fight in Ukraine? Or, would you send your child or grandchild? Because somebodys children have to go. Thats the cost.
As far as consequences, are you willing to risk global thermonuclear war? Because there is a less than zero chance of that happening if NATO attacks Russian forces.

(9,137 posts)The answer, for me at least, is with our NATO allies that we've pledged to defend.
In the mean time, we support Ukraine with as much as we can muster, short of shooting at the Russians ourselves.

(9,006 posts)he's facing one of the biggest, messiest, most tangled-up investigations in history, and each week we learn something that factors in. we got mafia money, we got huge dark money, we got Russian oligarch money, we got some entangled US Senators, House members and SCOTUS members all tied up together.
biggest investigation in history? could be, and it ain't over by any means.

(12,437 posts)Maybe before summer, Russia and Ukraine sign a peace deal that ends the war.
Yeah, there'd be concessions for Russia but it ends the problem which is hurting the WORLD.
Pyrrhic victory... is it worth it to get every Russian boot out of Ukraine, no matter the cost?
If yes... our Tardigrade successors will be happy.

(5,164 posts)I saw a lot of bare shelves at WF the other day but I think it was due to a storm and they are like that sometimes even in normal circumstances. Prices are going up on many items I buy since the war started. The start of the pandemic was the worst and things never got back to normal, price gouging started then.

(19,233 posts)That's 3 months worth for my entire family, not just myself. It came in very handy during quarantine. Now would be a good time to stock up if you have the money and space. Canned vegetables, beans, rice, lentils, pastas, tuna, chicken, sauces, etc will all last years if need be.
Also a good time to work on your vegetable garden plans. Mine will be huge (huger?) this year, and I'm going to really double down on canning and dehydrating. I'm down to my last 40 jars of tomato sauce, salsa and chili starter. The bread and butter pickle reserves are holding strong though, thank God 🤣

(36,745 posts)During WW1, the US government advocated the consumption of corn bread over wheat bread so the crop could be used to feed Europe and our soldiers.
There will be wheat based products in North America, they just will be a LOT more expensive.
India, Pakistan, Africa and the Middle East are going to see war-based famine.

(15,805 posts)Still have four more to either put in place or assemble (then put in place). Im using birdies raised beds because Im able to just stand and plant/harvest rather than bend down. Ill be maxed out this year for bed space.
I have a ton of vegetables and flowers starting. I ended up doing a lot of winter sowing and am just now getting to spring sowing. My onions, leeks and kales are getting planted out this weekend.
I could spend a good hour plus a day in the yard working on the garden area. Generally this time of year, I do. Hurts like heck to prep beds but its so worth it by summer.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)before you even get to the pleasures of fussing and watching everything grow.
We're twixt and between these days with moving seasonally, and I really miss starting seeds in the winter and getting to put them out. So I mainly do some fast salad-type greens that grow fast in a couple raised block beds we threw together, and herbs. When I get back to it for real, it will definitely be raised beds. Crawling around on the ground and leaning in is darned uncomfortable; how didn't I notice that all those years?
Enjoy. I know you will.
