A less exciting election than France, but very good news. The far-right populist party whose leader is currently Prime Minister just lost really badly, and the liberal left party won big, which means a Left/Center-left coalition and new Prime Minister.

(101,294 posts)The election had been expected to be tight but the exit poll by the Mediana Institute showed the Freedom Movement leading with 35.8% of the vote, far more than expected, while the SDS had secured 22.5% of the vote.
That would give the Freedom Movement, which campaigned on the transition to green energy, an open society and the rule of law, 42 seats in the 88-seat parliament and the SDS 26 seats.
Whichever party wins will have to secure coalition partners to form a new government.

(71 posts)I hope as well that other countries follow suit and reject Putin's infiltration of their political philosophy. Using the populist angle is a handy trick to rial people up. It is really scary here in the states, I see many Putin parallels that Trump used, 99% were lies, but were clearly a model of Putin's strategy to upset the west with mountains of cooperative right wing media outlets like Fox News and Sinclair Broadcasting network. It didn't help that the Trump appointed FCC head allowed Sinclair to buy up numerous radio and others in order to establish a coordinated attack on democracy and free speech. Respective news Anchors read off the same scripts nationwide.
The populist playbook reads like Hitler's, demonize non whites, shatter NATO and reverse long held judicial decisions by packing the courts with far right and many unqualified judges, including the last three appointed to the Supreme Court. All of this wouldn't be possible without the traitor congress and senate enablers, the biggest group of hypocrites and liars in our history.
Those responsible are nothing more than cowards, saying one thing in private and the opposite in public.
The Democrats must coordinate their message in unison, tie in what is happening in Ukraine, especially the Putin lead-up to the war and see how it is happening here as well.
In Helsinki Trump sickenly bowed down to Putin for everyone to see, but apparently a large segment of our population were tuned into the wrong news outlets. Trump's self-serving motives were predictable, he wanted approval from Putin to build the Trump hotel in Moscow, but Putin played Trump like a fiddle, held his puppet strings and had him undermine NATO as a prelude to invading Ukraine later.
The Democrats must back down on the immigration issue, it is poison and I believe it will cause us to lose both the house and senate if they continue to harp on it. Being humanitarian is generally a good thing, but it can also backfire and create a movement that opens the door for nationalist right wing supremacists to infiltrate our politics.

(32,612 posts)If a Populist candidate actually told the voters what he/she was really going to do, they'd never get elected. That's why they lie, and once they're in office they do whatever the hell they want. Also Populists usually don't have much loyalty to their Party either.
