Yes, I'm an 'old fart' and I've spent my time in 'gutter talk' (in the times between Jr. Hi and college graduation I worked at a bakery with career bakers - they DID have a vocabulary!).
In the past 15 years I've spent time in social settings (yeah, mostly 'craft beer' bars and 'comedy clubs') - the 'language' is now something that WOULD 'shock a sailor' - as my Mother would say. The 'F' bomb is no longer a bomb - more like a 'mild burp.'
And yes, it IS a decline in social decorum - accelerated by changes in public mores, social networks, TV, and what's accepted in homes.
That is the way society is shifting - and it is indeed unsettling to some.
And I'm with you - it ain't good.....

And, if your kids hear the word early (I heard my dad say it driving in Maine in 1959. Almost crashed. He said the word "fuck" multiple times.) He always said that word. Growing up in 30's Brooklyn , the USN in WW2, at work - but never home. Until that time. No idea what it meant, but it meant something in that moment.

So if we are seeing an increase (and we are), we are also seeing an increased desire for violence. If we are directing "fucks" at particular people, we are signaling we'd like to hurt them ourselves or we'd like someone else to hurt them.

It doesn't seem like no big deal to me.

Circa '04-05ish. There was a complaint about the use of the word fuck being brandied about too much. Skinner chimed in and his response was hilarious and put it to rest for a few months, at least. He said basically it was an amazingly versatile word (with many hilarious examples) entrenched in our lexicon for that very reason.

In light of my fond memories of him, and some nostalgia for then, I will share this in the spirit of that memory. It's not his words, but it captures the essence of what he said decently.

Variations of Ways “Fuck” Graces the Average American’s Tongue
a way to express anger/dissatisfaction eg. “You’re a fucking bitch.”

used when confused/irritated/annoyed/enraged eg. “What the fuck?” and in extreme cases “What the fucking fuck?!”

used in response to physical or emotional pain eg. “Fuck, my toe!”

referring to sexual intercourse eg. “Let’s fuck.”

in trouble/being upset with oneself eg. “I’m fucked.” or “Fuck me.”

telling someone they are inadequate eg. “Fuck you” or “You’re a fuck.”

asking someone to go away eg. “Fuck outta here.”

a word to emphasize something good, bad, intense, or exciting eg. “I just fucking won the lottery!” or “Fuck yeah/fuck no.”

describing how much someone cares about any given topic eg. “Who gives a fuck?” or “I give zero fucks.”

admitting to defeat/letting go eg. “Fuck it.”

used to express surprise eg. “Holy fuck!”

to do someone wrong eg. “She fucked me over good.”

to joke around with someone eg. “Are you fucking with me?”

to be in an extremely bad situation eg. “They’re fucked.”

to be messed up/in a poor mental/physical state of being eg. “He is fucked up.”

to describe a person eg. “What a dumb fuck.”

used to describe someone who has made a mess of their life/continuously made poor choices that left them financially/mentally unstable eg. “They’re a fuck up from all those drugs.”

There are probably more uses of the word that I forgot about, but as you can see, fuck is like the only word in the English language that has an absolutely absurd amount of uses.

I can confidently say that for as long as I live, I will probably use the word fuck multiple times per day, because — why the fuck not? Let me know in the comments what other uses of the word fuck that I missed. You fucking rock!

https://medium.com/the-orange-journal/the-f-word-is-the-best-word-b8e2bc202ef6

I hope life has brought you much fucking joy wherever you've landed, Skinner.

Fri May 6, 2022, 12:15 AM
May 2022

While it hasn't reached the innocuous level of "damn", fuck, through use, especially in a variety of forms, is becoming more and more 'acceptable' and less of a "naughty word." If you can believe it, there was a time when "damn" was the worse swear word, and "fuck" was quite common and on the level of "damn" is now. It is possible the word may be joining "damn", "shit" and "hell" in the drges of not being all that offensive.

Well, growing up in a very blue collar town and working blue collar job's all my life it was common to me and kids my age from a very early age and more so when we got into the workforce, however it was seldom if ever heard in most peoples homes , just at school or later at work, I agree it has gotten so common anymore that, regretfully, it isn't the shocker it used to be in almost any company nowadays. One story I must share however, while it was not normal to hear it in most peoples homes that did not apply to my father, he constantly used it day in and day out. My mother was half afraid of him because he could be abusive so said nothing. My great grandmother however was another story, I will never forget and still laugh to this day when he used it in her house one occasion {she was his maternal grandmother} after being warned about it and she proceeded to drag him by the hair to the kitchen sink and literally washed his mouth out with for real a bar of ivory laundry soap. He was bent over trying to avoid it , turned his head away screaming to leave him alone but she was having none of it, she stuck it in his mouth and literally scrubbed for probably 10 seconds or so before letting him go. He was abusive to my mother and me sometimes but he obviously didn't have it in him to fight his grandmother. She was a pretty tough old scottish lady who lived most of her life in the coal fields, her family on both sides were coalminers s as was her husband whom was killed in a cave in in 1948 in a roundup MT. coal mine. Anyway I watched this scene go down and still think it's one of the funniest things ever since at the time he was 51 and she was 95
