WASHINGTON -- The Justice Department has asked the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack for transcripts of interviews it is conducting, which have included discussions with associates of former President Donald J. Trump, according to people with knowledge of the situation. The move, coming as Attorney General Merrick B. Garland appears to be ramping up the pace of his painstaking investigation into the Capitol riot, is the clearest sign yet of a wide-ranging inquiry at the Justice Department.
The House committee has interviewed more than 1,000 people so far, and the transcripts could be used as evidence in potential criminal cases, to pursue new leads or as a baseline text for new interviews conducted by federal law enforcement officials. Aides to Representative Bennie Thompson, Democrat of Mississippi and the chairman of the committee, have yet to reach a final agreement with the Justice Department on what will be turned over, according to a person with knowledge of the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the confidential nature of the investigations.
On April 20, Kenneth A. Polite Jr., the assistant attorney general for the criminal division, and Matthew M. Graves, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, wrote to Timothy J. Heaphy, the lead investigator for the House panel, advising him that some committee interviews "may contain information relevant to a criminal investigation we are conducting."
Mr. Polite and Mr. Graves did not indicate the number of transcripts they were requesting or whether any interviews were of particular interest. In their letter, they made a broad request, asking that the panel "provide to us transcripts of these interviews, and of any additional interviews you conduct in the future." Spokesmen for the Justice Department and the House committee declined to comment.

(146,284 posts)the end of its work. It's a separation of powers thing. I'm sure they have much of the same information, but will add those transcripts to the documentation of their investigation. Then, the DOJ will start presenting evidence to grand juries to get indictments of those responsible for the insurrection.
It's a slow process. Too slow for some people who seem to think, "Well, we KNOW they're guilty. Why don't they get on with it." Because they have to convince a grand jury and a trial jury. That's why. The more evidence, the better their cases.
Now, we can get started with bringing the leadership of this whole debacle to justice. And I trust that Merrick Garland, as Attorney General, will do just that, methodically and effectively. Of course, it will require a large team of prosecutors, investigators, and others to make that happen. They will deserve our gratitude and thanks, as well.

(4,913 posts)We knew this is a massive investigation, very sensitive and it would take time. I imagine Garland will get the transcripts of interviews, then do his own interviews and compare them.
This is the largest investigation in our history.

(54,770 posts)Id bet money some of the Committee members and/or staff have regularly communicated with DOJ.
Maybe the are going to pursue criminal charges, or maybe they are just covering the bases when people start screaming at them for not charging trump and close associates with something, anything.

(5,840 posts)The DOJ didn't ask for the transcripts of the top tier people because the J6 committee hadn't interviewed most of the top people until now.
This indicates that they are looking at criminal charges for the top people. It also may indicate the DOJ may try to get some of them to flip on the others once they know what was said.
This is a big fucking deal.
I hope those motherfucker treasonous bastards can't sleep at night.

New: Jan. 6 committee chair Bennie Thompson tells CBS that they wont turn over transcripts to DOJ right now: They made a request. We told them that as a committee, our work product was ours, and were not giving anyone access to the work product.

(5,840 posts)I also wonder if they want to hang onto them until after the hearings in case they call any of the traitorous bastards in for the televised hearings.
Sure would make for some entertaining TV if they confronted some of these assholes on live TV with their own words (provided they didn't all plead the Fifth).

(111,077 posts)It is all connected. The criminal acts of January 6th and the inflammatory speeches and the disregard for subpoenas by people in Congress and the possible violence building up in this country. They can wait no longer. Justice must be served. The threats must be taken down.
It is obvious that it is not going to get better or go away on its own. It must be addressed.
