(21,417 posts)because I am a woman, because I support the right to abortion choice, and because I am an American citizen.
The citizen part is important because, as citizens, we cannot allow any church, whether Catholic or Evangelical, to dictate their beliefs on everyone.
As a private, independent organization, the Catholic Church is entitled to refuse communion to any of its members, if the rules of the church allow it. But when they grandstand about it against a national leader during an election year, then they are blatantly using their religion for political ends to attempt to make their beliefs the law for everyone.
It would be interesting if Madame Speaker responded by attending an Episcopal Church for communion. The Episcopal Church is a priestly church (as compared to churches that have ministers, not priests). They share the Catholic belief in transubstantiation of the elements of communion. They accept all baptized people to communion, whether or not they are Episcopalian. They do not forbid abortion. Although they advise people to seek help in finding alternative solutions to abortion, they recognize that it is a complex issue and that the option should be available.
If Nancy Pelosi went to an Episcopal Church for communion, it might inspire other Catholics to do the same in finding a place where they can keep their faith and also support choice.

Reminds me of the friend I have, Catholic, was married for over 20 years, four children. All kids are grown now, and he has divorced and wants to remarry. Catholic church required him to have his first marriage annulled. You heard that right, annulled, as if it never occurred (what about the kids?), so of course he did that because ...

(10,749 posts)But I doubt she will. She may just stop going. Given who she is, that will be quite a signal. Also, she probably has the means of getting directly in touch with the Pope. Could be interesting if she chooses to play it that way.
But, once more, it highlights the need to enforce separation of church and state. And once a church - any church, crosses that line, set the wheels in motion to tax them. One church at a time. The message will be clear.
Unfortunately, the government doesn't have the balls to try this.

(17,179 posts)I have a retired Nun who lives next door and believes abortion should be legal, can't remember all the
reasons she mentioned but I do remember her last line and it went something like this........
"If God truly hates abortion, St Peter will punish them on Judgment Day, that knowledge alone should
make some people happy but it never will, and they'll never stop attacking women to live the way they
think they should live. When St Peter meets these people he'll inform them that they never treated
their neighbor the way they wanted to be treated. Remember that's the only commandment in the
new testament."

(10,302 posts)While I share for the most part the Church of England's stance on abortion (it's not much more advanced than that of the Church of Rome) there are a couple of overriding things here -
1) who am I to judge? This is a matter between patient, doctor and God as they understand God to be (or not).
2) absolutely no one is worthy of Communion (not me, not you, not the Archbishop, not the Pope, not the Queen, etc) but it's through God's grace that we're welcome at the table. I don't know what part of "all are welcome" the Archbishop doesn't get. Or maybe it's just where Rome has erred. Again of course.

Now the bishops, fresh off an almost assured victory on abortion, have found a new target -- Catholic politicians in Congress.
Everything we've thought has been settled for last century is up for grabs. It's not all TFG's fault -- there's been an ongoing push toward authoritarianism since Richard Nixon, or maybe earlier. Nixon made the WH guards wear a uniform more suited to a marching band:

Most people take jobs out of necessity to survive and most have to violate some aspect of their moral beliefs in the course of their work, and quite often. That's true when working for most American companies and Republicans are fine with that.
If this bishop wasn't up to his ears in hypocrisy, he would forbid his parishioners from working for most American corporations. That would indeed set Rethug heads spinning.

(21,550 posts)It is unfair Pelosi is being punished for standing up for the rights of Americans, against the will of the Pope no less, but I'm going to try to see a bigger picture..........
If this makes someone see the the church is out of line with their personal values, and they decide to leave, so much the better.
If they see politics guiding the church's decisions, against the Pope's will, and they find that abhorrent, and decide to leave because of that corruption, so much the better.
Organized religion is the middle man. Like the middle man, they take a product, buy it from a manufacturer, mark it up 20%, and send it on to a retailer for you to buy. In this case, the product is your eternal soul (if you believe in such things).
Society, and individuals, do not need the middle man. Organized religion is already seeing its numbers dwindle in the USA, and I hope this continues to erode that. My heart goes out to Pelosi's for the persecution she is made to suffer for their corruption, but people will leave the church over this, and hasten its demise. That might still be centuries away. Heck maybe the human race will already have destroyed itself through global warming by then, but the end of organized religion is a day I'll welcome. You don't need them to take your hard earned money so you can talk to God. Their own teachings, ironically, should be proof enough of that.
