The trial of well-connected lawyer Michael Sussmann centers on whether he lied to the FBI while sharing potentially damaging allegations about Donald Trump at a key moment in the 2016 presidential campaign.
But the first week of testimony showed the prosecutions hopes for a conviction rest largely on a much broader set of assertions: that the FBI, the Hillary Clinton campaign and the press collided in ultimately harmful ways, leading to the public airing of unsubstantiated allegations shortly before Election Day.
Sussmanns trial is the first courtroom test of the investigative work done by special counsel John Durham, appointed by Trump administration Attorney General William P. Barr to probe whether the federal agents who investigated the 2016 Trump campaign committed wrongdoing. Somewhat surprisingly, in this prosecution and another scheduled for trial this fall, Durhams team contends not that FBI officials committed crimes but were the victims of others lies.
Sussmann, a cybersecurity lawyer who has represented Democrats and technology firms, has denied breaking the law. His defense team argues that what prosecutors suggest was a duplicitous conspiracy to smear Trump was in truth people acting independently, and with good intentions, to raise alarms about what they saw as suspect behavior.

(25,449 posts)"While researching ISIS's tactics, we came across two efforts that seemed at odds with the terrorist's capabilities ... forensic analysis showed that the entity used in the attack was confirmed to be FANCY BEAR. I watched with interest when news of the WikiLeaks trove came out. One glance at the data revealed to me that they had the stolen DNC information that had been taken by COZY BEAR and FANCY BEAR. WikiLeaks was clearly acting as a Russian laundromat for stolen materials.
"It immediately became clear to me, and my brothers and sisters in US Intelligence, that a massive cyber warfare operation was afoot. I had been the first to publicly declare on national television that the United States had been subjected to a wide-ranging cyber and political warfare attack. ... When I added one and one together with the DNC hack, the Guccifer 2.0 blog, and the WikiLeaks data dump, it was an obvious large-scale, old-school KGB-style Russian information warfare operation. It could have but one goal -- elect Donald Trump president. ... It was daring and could only have been directed by Vladimir Putin. ... But the news media were interested in the emails and not the source. The more stolen data that was released, the more voraciously the media covered the story.
"When Donald Trump gave speeches complaining about a certain subject, within days entire dumps of DNC and DCCC emails on that subject would hit the news media from both Guccifer 2.0 and WikiLeaks. For example, emails on Pennsylvania and Florida primaries were released soon after Trump mentioned them. When he disparaged Nancy Pelosi, a huge tranche of documents on her was released. The flood continued with the entire DNC database for New Hampshire, Ohio, Illinois, and North Carolina hitting the streets -- all Democratic battleground states that Trump eventually won. I spent days on television warning that there was a cyberwar designed to destroy the Democratic Party and tilt the election in favor of Donald Trump. ... The impact of the stolen email flood was to keep the US news media fed with day-after-day of Democratic Party emails. It didn't matter that they were extremely benign or that none of them was from Hillary Clinton's email server; the media ate it up."
Attacking Democrats by pretending WikiLeaks and others promoting conspiracy theories were actually on the left was masterful propaganda. Shame so many fell for it.

(95,244 posts)First, he is under no obligation to give any reason for a tip about a possible crime. No one passes information to any police agency without a motive. If you tell police your ex is dealing dope, they will not inquire about your bitter divorce, if the heroin is actually on the premises.
Second, if he did in fact state he had no client's interest in mind, that is not material, it does not effect the police agency's actions at all. The motive for the tip doesn't matter, their reaction to the tip would be the same.
