(345 posts)It was his grandmother's truck, and by the account of a neighbor who saw him take off from the grandmother's home after shooting her he didn't know how to get it out of park, fumbled with the shifter for a bit before speeding away.

(6,535 posts)so there's also the issue of predatory banks blithely handing out $5k credit limits to teenagers, but then you start to get into the whole question as to why in the fuck anyone would feel so desperate and angry as to be inspired to murder children as a way of "getting back at the world." We need to take a real hard look at our whole society and way of living; if we don't do something drastic soon it won't matter anyway, since we'll all die in the climate crisis.

(4,131 posts)Why do we try to further sensationalize the already horrific and sensational?
These are civilian weapons that, while outwardly similar in appearance, are functionally very different from their military grade counterparts.
RAB910
(3,445 posts)First, those weapons are absolutely military-grade (I didn't fall for the same tired trap of calling them "assault rifles"
Second, with 19 kids murdered why are words used so important???
This weapon was made for mass killing, that is a fact. So why the word games pretending it's not?
PTWB
(4,131 posts)There is no doubt that the AR-15 is a deadly weapons platform. But it isnt equivalent to its fully automatic, military grade cousins.
Children have been murdered. Is that not horrific and sensational enough? Do we really need to embellish our description of the weapon used to commit those murders?
RAB910

(4,131 posts)Some are equipped with flash hiders while others are equipped with different muzzle devices. Regardless, theyre still very common hunting rifles.

(4,131 posts)That doesnt mean it isnt also an incredibly common hunting rifle and home defense weapon.

(3,445 posts)weapons that are designed to kill people as many and as quickly as possible
It's why they have flash suppressors. It's why they usually have mechanisms to minimize muzzle rise and recoild. It's why they have 30-round magazines.
this weapon is based on the M4 Carbine
Care to tell me WHO uses that weapon???
BruceWane
(345 posts)So an AR-15 can "only" fire bullets as fast as you can pull the trigger, while drawing from a high capacity magazine. That's a hell of a lot lot closer to full auto that it is to double-hammer or bolt action.
It's a weapon that has no business in civilian hands. It is not "civilian grade". Unless there's some other "grade" of firearms that I'm not familiar with, that leaves one classification to place it in, doesn't it?
The entire point of enacting strict control of these weapons is that they are demonstrably quite capable of unleashing the kind of carnage seen in war and are thus "military grade".
We don't classify Javelin anti-tank weapons as "military grade" based on their ability to fire multiple times per second. We classify them as such based on the destruction they manifest. Why should we not apply the same standard to guns?

(4,131 posts)Here we go again
If someone cannot make an argument without embellishing or sensationalizing or misrepresenting, perhaps there is a flaw in their argument?
Children have been murdered. Is that not horrific enough? Do we really need to embellish details about the alresdy deadly weapon used to murder them?

(4,131 posts)Clearly our push to pass meaningful, common sense gun control has been working beautifully and we dont need to rethink our approach.

(4,131 posts)There is no dispute about the AR-15s lethality. Its an incredibly effective killing machine.

(4,131 posts)If we cannot be accurate, precise, targeted, and factual with our push for gun control, we will have as much success as we've had since Sandy Hook. That is to say -- none.
Safe storage laws and universal background checks are popular and could prevent some of the carnage that we see on a far too regular basis. They wouldn't have prevented this particular shooting but they may have prevented others. If we want those to pass we must not fall victim to hyperbole, embellishment, or misinformation.

(6,535 posts)if the murdering fuck had used an M249 he probably could have wiped out half the town before anybody could stop him, and that's more or less where the line is drawn right now. If he'd used a 155mm gun he could have wiped out the entire town and probably part of San Antonio too, and we can't have those kind of weapons, which really are "military-grade" as you mean it.
That kind of thing is why I mostly avoid the whole gun-banning part of the conversation at this point; aside from the fact that it is never going to happen, certainly not with the current fascist SCOTUS, I don't see any use anyway in banning a particular style of carbine or a particular type of small-arms ammunition or something. As it is now, fully automatic weapons are effectively "banned" (at least for people who aren't rich and can pay the exorbitant licensing fees), workarounds for that were banned after the Las Vegas shooting, and you don't see civilians out there with fully armed tanks or flying F-18s, or even simple things like claymores and mortars such.
We can do a lot more in the way of background checks, licensing and training requirements (the whole purpose of the 2nd Amendment being to maintain a "well-regulated militia" after all), I would say including periodic proficiency checks and inspections, safe-keeping requirements, and maybe even insurance requirements like we have with cars. That would help considerably and would not, in my opinion, be unconstitutional.
But we need to address the root cause as to why anyone would be inspired/compelled to lash out at the world like this.

(12,581 posts)Grandparents probably signed over their spare truck to him so he had a vehicle to get to school or work in.
We did that with the kidlet when we upgraded our vehicle after she got her licence at 18. She was still living with us, so saving money was no problem for her.
She paid us for her insurance (and her cell phone) and we signed over the 2001 Focus to her for a dollar. She was able to take home around four to five hundred every two weeks at her ~ 28 hr a week retail job, so if she wanted to save up $5k for any reason, it might have taken her 10 months or so. Less time if she convinced her manager to give her more hours, picked up some extra money selling craft jewelry or doing odd jobs, or after she got her taxes back during that period she started saving for that $5k.

The early reporting was that he was bullied because he was poor. They made fun of his clothes.
Where does a poor kid get $5000? That amount would have bought a lot of cool clothes.
