(22,460 posts)Guns to make them feel courageous. All studies show that a gun in the house makes people less safe. Pepper spray works better. Yet so many just have to hold on to their guns anyway. It has nothing to do with actual protection
Plus I think some of them just want the fantasy of killing a bad guy. They should take up video games instead

Heres how the Uvalde Police Department handled this situation:
- Restrained parents begging them to go inside.
- Only went inside to get their own kids out.
- Border patrol agent who killed shooter had staff member unlock the door for him.
I never want to hear protect and serve again in my fucking life!!

(424 posts)Seems like a better plan to unlock door than to kick it in. Having someone unlock it makes sense too. (It would have better if another agent did the unlocking)

(28,243 posts)Not just the boots on the ground at that Uvalde elementary school, but the higher-ups who put the clearly inadequate training programs in place. We may be stuck with shitheads like Abbott and Cruz for the time being, but there is no excuse for the complete clusterfuck at that school, where anxious parents faced more intimidation than the gun-wielding psychotic in that classroom.
Maybe their sergeant will get a commendation for keeping order outside while "things were developing" inside.

(2,636 posts)Cops are paid to protect property, not people.
They worried the Brown folk might be out of line. Clearly, they're the scary problem, not the kid with military style weapons.
Paladin
(28,243 posts)It's South Texas---way too much "Brown" in the area for your racial i.d. theories to be seriously considered.
Law enforcement at the school site was completely incompetent; children and teachers died as a result. If you saw the press conference that concluded a few minutes ago, you can see that the incompetence is an ongoing thing.
Claire Oh Nette
(2,636 posts)The Texas leadership is largely white; why 40 minutes? Why Border Patrol?
Incompetence is rampant in policing. Good ol' boy networks and the last bastions of manly man macho posturing left.
Law enforcement at the elementary school was absent; LE at an elementary school should be unnecessary. They visited our grade schools, they weren't stationed there.
It's not about turning schools into fortresses or prisons or workhouses.
It's about too many phucking guns.
My racial ID is irrelevant, but thanks for tone policing my snark.

(9,645 posts)The hispanic cops were deliberately letting hispanic children be killed
Can you understand why that is offensive?
Claire Oh Nette
(2,636 posts)The White governor has yet to visit, but he's fund raised off keeping Texans safe from 4th graders, apparently.
There's a lot about gun violence that is very racial. Why were parents handcuffed? Why was a father held on the ground by four officers?
I question why Border and Customs was needed an hour later.
Of course this is offensive. Children are dead so that Gun Nuts can easily get their gun hard on to shoot 38 people, with 21 dead, likely more to come. It offends humanity that white fear of the other drives gun sales.

more courage unarmed than those in the heavily armed police response. Who did a grand job harassing and violently restraining distraught and anguished parents listening to their children being slaughtered?

(2,636 posts)Maybe women should do the policing, and the governing.
Women take bullets for their students. Cops tase parents and kill black kids over expired tags and lose cigarettes because they fear for their lives. Get a different job, you cowardly little eunuchs.

Typically they took officials at their word and later their lies would come out. A lack of response for hours was common while the government would lie about how fast they were.

(4,575 posts)Some cops where I live are telling people that it is basically not worth their time to pursue criminals and make excuses that blame bail reform, Democrats passing bills that are soft on crime, judges, the governor who revoked their qualified immunity, etc. Some people are so ill informed that they accept that excuse from the cops because they are too cowed to question them. My response is always that they can do their job or get fired and if any cop tells you it's not their job you need to report them and not just to their supervisor but also to your local representatives. These people in Texas are between a rock and a hard place though because politically the people that are representing them are not really on their side.

(111,135 posts)As for the cops in the parking lot, they were seriously outgunned and they knew it, so they broke windows and tried to get kids to safety. It didn't work, but their instincts were sound. They also shot at the kid from outside, drawing his fire. Again, their instincts were sound. They didn't just stand around with their thumbs up their asses and urine soaking into their shorts. That's unfair.
Remember, start to finish, this thing was over in minutes. The kid had 2 weapons of mass murder on him and I don't know of anything outside of sci fi that would have stopped him. It's not like cops keep sharpshooters stationed at all schools, restaurants, grocery stores, movie theaters, and churches.
The only thing that will keep us safer is getting the weapons of mass murder off the streets, period.
VMA131Marine
(4,135 posts)Yes, minutes well over 40 of them while the cops stood outside and could hear the shooting going on. In an active shooter situation the training is to run to the sound of the gunfire and engage the shooter. The Uvalde cops were incompetent at best and cowards at worst. It took a border patrol in their to take the initiative and go in alone.
NH Ethylene
(30,803 posts)The killing itself only took minutes.
I haven't seen those details you mention, as yet. But if the Border Patrol could like officers up behind a single shield and go in and kill the shooter, why could't the MANY police officers present outside the school do exactly that same thing?
Tommymac
(7,263 posts)Minutes? Yeah, like at LEAST 40 by all timelines published so far. Probably more.
And explain the parents outside desperately trying to get the cops to do something, and the cops reportedly cuffing/restraining a parent? Something ain't right here.
inthewind21
(4,616 posts)Haven't the slightest clue about any of this. No they were not "seriously outgunned" there is plenty of video and photos to contradict the myth you are trying to pimp. No the kid DID NOT have 2 weapons of mass murder, he bought 2, but he only had 1 when he went into the school, the other he left in the crashed truck. That has also been widely reported and was yesterday afternoon,. There was no firing at the kid from outside. The Texas DPS confirmed that. And no, it was not "over in a matter of minutes" The murder was inside the school for an hour. It's clear you watched Abbots theater press conference and bought ALL of it hook line and sinker.

(6,161 posts)1. the news reports are saying the families will need DNA testing to ID the kids.
2. that would suggest to me that maybe the kids were being shot so they won't be recognizable. I will say no more.
3. As an ex-military medic there are sights you do not want to see. Especially involving a loved one.
4. I am NOT defending the law enforcement action (as reported) for the time lag for entering the building.
5. there are obviously lots we don't know and it will take a thorough federal investigation to get to the truth.
WE NEED TO GET GUN REGULATIONS PASSED or this will continue to happen and happen and happen.
Thoughts and prayers have run their course. Enough! Enough!
NH Ethylene
(30,803 posts)I do think that is why the DNA samples were requested though. Parents would recognize their child's outfit and their hair and other things about them. But to have to see their little ones like that would have been horrific.

(30,803 posts)Border Patrol is who finally went into the classroom where the children had been shot. There was nobody else in there who was alive to shout out injuries, unless you are suggesting the gunman did it (or the 4 children hiding under the table in fear for their lives).

You do not need a negotiator for an active shooter in a elementary school.

(3,567 posts)The GOP officials will never find the funds to make that happen.
After another event they have talked about the importance of engaging the shooter ASAP. I dont remember the specific mass shooter event but they said rapid shooter response drills saved lives.
They waited for a negotiator and the boarder patrol to deal with it. The only negotiator that you need for an active shooter in an elementary school is a laser sight.
