I know plenty of people who own guns who aren’t at all the way you described. In the last couple years there’s been a surge of women and minorities buying guns as well, apparently.
The fundamental problem is that unlike Australia, the UK, etc, guns aren’t going away in America. I think there would be a consensus (as in 1994) if both sides believed the other were operating in good faith. Sadly, the attitude of too many on the left is “you know what, yes, we ARE coming for your guns, fuck you, you’ll be lucky if we let you keep your granddad’s deer rifle.” That may be understandable after incidents such as what just occurred, but it isn’t going to lead to progress. Background checks, no private sales, increased age limits for buying, mandatory safety training, would all be popular and people on the right would grudgingly go along IF they weren’t convinced that the end goal is to take away a their guns, which for many on the left, IS indeed the end goal. You can say “yeah and fuck them, I’m not negotiating with gun humpers.” Well, then nothing at all happens…Overreach on guns would also lead many states to just defy any federal action…Look at Missouri already. And if you say “fuck them, well confiscate!” Who will confiscate? The police? Many of whom are also on the right wing of the spectrum on guns, who have no interest in going after 1 shooter, let alone tens of millions of people?
When millions of people who wouldn’t hurt a fly get furiously whirled around upon and screamed at “LOOK WHAT YOU DID YOU GUN FUCKERS” and forcibly given ownership of what someone else did, they aren’t going to cooperate. And again, we need them to cooperate.
