Images of the Mona Lisa painting stained with cake cream after a person stamped a cake on it went viral on Sunday, despite the fact that the cake actually collided with the glass that protects Leonardo da Vinci's work in the Louvre Museum in Paris.
According to witness testimony, the perpetrator was a man in a wheelchair who wore a wig. To the surprise of the other guests, he would have suddenly stood up and approached La Gioconda, throwing the cake at her.

(51,308 posts)I'm surprised he managed to do as much as he did.
I hope he was arrested.

(64,421 posts)I don't recall being to get that close. Not many feet, but certainly way more than arms length.
It says be smashed the cake
I'm interpreting that not throwing it. Maybe I'm reading too much into it.
I just don't remember being able to get within touching distance.

Either way, the painting wasn't damaged because of the glass.

(51,308 posts)I read they covered it in glass back in the 60s. I had no idea it was that long ago.
I do remember being disappointed I couldn't get closer to it, and of course there was a huge crowd around it.

Couldn't get all that close, ropes or not.
I recall being able to get closer to Winged Victory than the Mona Lisa.
