me that he didn't know exactly what he was doing all along. And he knew what he was doing was wrong, he knew he was trying to steal an election, and he went for it.

More likely that the rational people around him (were there any?) were unable to process that more than a dozen close advisors told him he lost and he refused to accept it. Adults usually get to a point of accepting things they don't like.
