NYT: "Far-Right Republicans Press Closer to Power Over Future Elections"

Last edited Wed Jun 15, 2022, 05:28 PM - Edit history (1)

Democrats may well never win again because the Republicans will simply change the votes.

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/06/15/us/politics/election-deniers-midterms.html

Midway through primary season, the party has nominated several candidates who deny the 2020 outcome for posts that will have significant sway over the 2024 presidential election.

The potential for far-right Republicans to reshape the election systems of major battleground states is growing much closer to reality.

As the halfway point nears of a midterm year that is vastly friendlier to Republicans, the party’s voters have nominated dozens of candidates for offices with power over the administration and certification of elections who have spread falsehoods about the 2020 presidential contest and sowed distrust in American democracy.

The only way to restore trust, these candidates say, is by electing them.

There is a lot more at the link.

If you are not terrified you should be.

GOTV is not the issue.

Counting the fucking votes is.

What they are accusing us of is what THEY WILL DO. It's always projection, because that is how they will justify it if caught, and the media will "both sides" it.

When we scream bloody murder that they stole the 2022 and 2024 elections they'll say "well now they just sound like Trump. blah blah blah" even though we will be factually correct.

This is how fascism comes.

Roe V. Wade
Climate Change
Racial Justtice
Environmental Protections
Income Protection
Social Security
Medicare

All those fall apart without fair elections.

Focus like a laser on the wolf at the door.

GOTV is actually how to bar the door. But it gets more and more difficult.

52 senators have brought us to this point.

I keep reading these things and I don’t doubt their truth but at the end of your post you say we should all be terrified and that getting out the vote isn’t the issue but counting the votes is.

What do we do?

help from Jimmy Carter's outfit or someone else who has done election monitoring. This is a common occurrence in other 3rd world countries. If we have monitors watching the electoral officials, the counters, the "watchers" and the pollsters at midterm AND in 2024, as well as GOTV, we have a good chance. If we leave it up to "American Ingenuity" we're going to get "American Idiocracy" and there goes our Democracy, I'm afraid. I'm not so egotistical as to believe that with the trouble we've had since GW Bush got into office... and especially since Trump... that our country is running smoothly and we can handle any more problems quietly and calmly on our own. One more large blowup and we're going into at least widespread civil rioting; especially if SCOTUS waits towards the end of term to announce Dobbs. Asking for help in a couple of elections may be embarrassing; but losing our freedom and our country is even more embarrassing!

If they plan to steal the election it’s highly unlikely they’ll allow monitors.

but I figure there must be a process, since it's done in other hostile-to-election-monitoring countries, as well. I've got work to do to get ready for my grandson's birthday today, but once he's gone, hopefully I'll still have some energy to do a little research on it. I'm intrigued by the idea, truly. Once I have some idea, I'll try to post something. Sound okay?
