In time the younger generations will come to power and usher in a new era, most likely a better era. That's how it has always worked.
Our democracy is stronger than a lot people think it is.
One day no one will be talking about the Trump voters. They will fade off into an infamous history. One day the Republican Party will moderate or die.
Can you imagine if there was a DU during the civil war. Can you imagine the posts we would all be reading.
I am as guilty as anyone getting depressed, hopeless, about these times. I always look towards history and it gives me a better perspective, a more realistic view of what is happening. How hopeful they future can be.
I consider history as my best teacher.

(5,499 posts)The last 5-6 years have been tough on the country. And on a lot of people. Unless we see a strong midterm reaction against Roe I think things will get much darker for the country. And people will suffer unnecessarily because of that.

(40,208 posts)This is a time. And there will be another time. These terrible people who brought us to this day will one day be dead and gone. And hopefully, when the young in this country grow into adulthood and take power, the compassionate and good people will outnumber those who want the world to regress to the Middle Ages.

(869 posts)There are those who continually fight for what is right for 'all' and the dispossesed often at their own work/family/life expense to get us through and out of the Era. Saying Eras pass is passive acceptance for "good people" to do nothing while others get hurt and even die while "good people" sit on the sideline waiting for the Era to just 'pass'.

If six morally twisted assholes declare guns have rights but women do not, and if the prospect of Trump in the White House doesn't enrage and unite us, and stampede us to polls en masse then nothing will....

For those of us who came of age in the mid-to late 60s, there was plenty of upheaval and lots of Americans thought the country was coming apart at the seams.

But whats happening to our only home the earth, and to its delicate balance of conditions in which humans can live - thats not cyclical, thats going one way. And even on a site like DU its mostly ignored, in favor of shinier things.
