Could the abortion ban lead to things like In vitro fertilization being banned?

We know Republicans across the country are passing insane laws, they can't control their extremism. They want more and more.

There may be more to the abortion ban than meets the eye. Imagine if the abortion ban leads to women who want a baby and can only have a baby through In vitro fertilization and it is outlawed. Holy shit.

I was just educating myself, something Trump voters don't do, about In vitro. The process can destroy many embryos. The Republicans could put that on their list of things to ban.

In theory, the embryos don't have to be destroyed. They can be frozen indefinitely, they can be donated for "adoption" by couples who can't create their own embryos, etc.

But what if you are required to commit to storing your embryos indefinitely or donating them for adoption and something happens? (The couple splits up and one is not willing to have a child out there being raised by someone else; the couple goes bankrupt - or dies - who pays the bill for continued storage, etc.)

After 2 positive Paps came back POSITIVE for cancerous cells inside my Cervix. I was 55 at the time and going through a terrible Menopause cycle that started 8 years prior.

If Republicans want to enact laws that prevent hysterectomies for reasons other than valid, they have the American Medical Association, as well as the group that oversees OB/GYNs in this country to contend with.

Let them try. This will PISS off even more women on both sides of the political spectrum who suffer from ailments associated with being female.

Since 2010, states have introduced or passed 83 bills that mention both abortion and IVF. Of these, 45 bills explicitly exempt IVF and assisted reproductive technologies. None of these bills explicitly included IVF — or any reproductive technology — in banning abortion or defining legal personhood as beginning at conception.

Women can get dozens of eggs harvested in a single IVF cycle. Clearly only a couple of those are destined to turn into live births.

Embryos are destroyed in the process. Ergo abortion. Be watching for new laws banning IVF.

You bring up a good point, though-- if people really think terminating a pregnancy is murder, shouldn't discarding frozen embryos also be murder? The Catholic Church, which if nothing else is generally consistent on these things, opposes IVF for this reason. But my guess is right now most people who want to ban abortion won't say anything about IVF.

And only 90% survive being thawed.

So if they are going to be accorded the full rights of a human being, it raises a lot of issues.

If the power to the freezer goes out, does somebody go to prison?

I have 2 1st cousins who both had IVF twins. Both are staunchly RTL Conservative Roman Catholic Republicans.

Did they "selectively harvest" the implanted eggs? Probably.

Did they have the unused embryos disposed of, or do they have some still frozen? Probably.

Does any of that bother them? Probably not, but if you follow the RTL logic to it's extreme, then yes, IVF results in murder.
