It's scary and frightening how the series was able to use the same dangerous deranged hero-worship we witness with Trump and show the same type of cult worship for the bad guy "heroes" in The Boys.
MINOR SPOILER ALERT
It chilled my blood to see the cult followers cheering Homelander after he murdered a heckler... It brought me back to Trump's none hyperbolic claim about shooting a man on 5th avenue

(3,491 posts)Theyre the same people who are happy when the cops gun down a child. That same people who screamed for President Obama to be killed when Idiot Palin called him a terrorist in one of her speeches. The same people who attacked the police on January 6th.
Dont think for a second that if Piss Wig or any of those loony toon pols publicly executed a protestor on stage that they wouldnt get that same reaction.
That character Todd is a pretty spot on depiction of a cultist. Fully manipulated by propaganda. When MM knocked him out, I feel like the whole audience cheered. Hes probably the most hated character on the show now.

(3,501 posts)I agree, the Todd depiction was spot on.

(3,491 posts)They identify with Homelander and feel that the show unfairly depicts him (and ultimately them) as a fascist. The weird thing is that they only started noticing this by the third season. Homelander revealed himself to be a true scumbag right off the bat. There was never any ambiguity about him.

(9,073 posts)I think the spoiler you mention was meant to be exactly what that was.
The rallies, the cable news appearances, etc. The bit about SB just being a media creation that doesn't really exist.
It's not subtle, and I think the writers have come out in interviews and openly said that's what they were doing.
I just binged the whole series over the past month and caught up in time for the season finale.
Such a great show. One of my favorite things about it is their complete willingness to absolutely roast celebrity culture. Brave Maeve, the Deep doing Gal Gadot's horribly tone deaf celebrity "Imagine" video, A-Train doing Kendall Jenner's Pepsi commercial.
Again, they are not subtle.

(9,073 posts)And they were saying things like, "He is so authentic. He speaks his mind. He doesn't let anyone control what he says."
And it's just like, "Yep. Heard that before."
They could have just spliced in 2016 campaign footage, and I don't think anyone would notice.

(34,105 posts)I will read what you and others say about it. I have little taste for watching anything entitled "The Boys" as I have little interest in anything they may want do or say at the moment.
When I saw it come up on Amazon I thought I would check it out but decided it will always be there and I need some downtime from "Boys and Mens" right now. I will keep it in mind as it does sound rather interesting but I hardly think the time will come in my remaining years that we will see the foot removed from our bodies by "the boys".
What a horrible time to have something to release named that. Probably just me but also probably not.
Deep State Witch
(10,424 posts)It's a sendup of superheroes and superhero culture. It is actually a takedown of toxic masculinity. Everyone in the show is screwed up, except for the lead female character. But, fair warning - there is a lot of extreme violence in it right from the start. If you don't like that kind of thing, you won't like it.

(16,091 posts)you'll have very little to watch. They are about half of the population.
But, whatever, The Boys is intense, well-made, and funny in a dark, dark way.

(10,424 posts)Kripke confirmed it. I know that Giant Freakin Robot is clickbait, but they did carry this story.

(Homelander has) always been a Trump analog for me
He has this really combustible mix of complete weakness and insecurity, and just horrible power and ambition, and its just such a deadly combo. Of course, he would feel victimized that people are angry that he dated a Nazi
All he ever wants is to be the most powerful person he can be, even though hes completely inadequate in his abilities to handle it
And those issues just happened to reflect the guy who
was f-cking President of the United States
And its a bigger issue than just Trump. The more awful public figures act, the more fans they seem to be getting. Thats a phenomenon that we (The Boys) wanted to explore, that Homelander is realizing that he can actually show them who he really is and theyll love him for it.

(8,262 posts)Its a show designed to feature grotesque FX, not insightful cultural/political parody, imo. I was in for two seasons but season 3 was the stopping point. I find the over reliance on shock gore to be frankly, beneath me. The show could be so much better than it is. Alas.
Tomer Capon is a great actor. I hope he has a career worthy of his talent (after this excess).
RAB910
(3,501 posts)This may be funny to say about what is essentially sci-fi/fantasy, but I think the gore actually adds a touch of realism. The reality is if people had the sort of superpowers that we see in comics and movies, the injuries would be as grotesque as what we see on the show. The bloodless depictions in comics and movies are pretty silly if you think about it.
It's a shame the gore has turned you off, as there is some keen cultural and political parody that you are missing out on.

(8,262 posts)I want to honor the no spoilers code and also point out the ant-man gratuitously-over-the-top-exploitation scene.
That was my breaking point. An unredeemable transgression.
