2. I read the book many years ago when first published, & it's still in print...

It didn’t hit me so hard then, tho I never forgot it. It’s quite a dystopian novel by a very good author.

However, by the time the movie series came out, times had changed significantly. All the progress we had made in my lifetime was starting to unravel and slide back into the Abyss. The series was/is immensely popular, but I was too spooked to want to watch it myself.

I am very encouraged by how many viewers see the direct parallels to our present danger. But if you either can’t get the series on your tv, or can’t bear to watch it, I highly recommend reading the book.

But Offred gained her strength then to truly fight back and lead the insurrection.

6. I read the book when it originally came out,

I knew this could happen here and it scared me to death. I remember having many long discussions with my husband about it. So sad I was prescient on this. I just wonder if we will even be able to get into Canada if that really does happen here? Would it be the entire USA or just part and would Gilead declare war on the other parts of the country that refuse to go along with the Christofascists?

7. The Red states are trying to out-do each other, now, in implementing christofascism.

The radicalized Republican party is subjugating all pregnant persons under their jurisdiction and threatening every woman capable of becoming pregnant.

They are at work on many fronts to make their rule permanent.

8. Travel restrictions

They are desperately trying to think of a way to prevent women from traveling across state lines for health care. That’s a huge step towards Gilead because meaningful enforcement will basically turn women into the property of the state and of men. They’re going to succeed in some state and the SCOTUS will OK it. They will start registering child bearing age women and controlling their travel. They’ll be required to be screened if they want to cross state lines. After that we’re one step from telling them they can’t leave the house without being accompanied by a man.

10. The conditions depicted in Gliead were a reality in this country for many years for marginalized

people. The horror of the story is that it suddenly happens to white women.
