(2,961 posts)Sorry, no respect for cops that dont do their jobs diligently. What do the criminals most want? Delay. Why would DOJ give them more time knowing election data was stolen when its raison detre is preventing a fraudulent election? Im not sure this election will be free and fair unless they move now.

(32,633 posts)The point was that Comey's job (as Director of the FBI) never consisted of making press releases or announcing that political candidates are being investigated. It's supposed to be the Attorney General's job, and Comey usurped him. Water over the dam, it will never happen again.

(2,961 posts)The idea of waiting until after an election to enforce the law is an idea from their side, not ours. In 2020 we had one chance and its here, now. Comey didnt wait to announce an investigation so why should DOJ wait now to enforce the law, i.e., indict? To give the traitor(s) more time? Thats the worst idea I can think of.

(21,304 posts)I honestly don't think that Garland has made up his mind yet. It took him weeks to decide to do the search warrant after boxes of classified documents had been sitting at Mar-el-Loco for 18 months.

Theres nothing to prove what his thought process was/is.

(6,818 posts)Or perhaps, if civil strife becomes inevitable, a moment when the law enforcement community will be more likely to help put that civil war down. Could be he's just waiting for, at least, a moment when his own FBI will reliably support the chain of command, law and order.
I think there's a real potential that many local and state community law enforcement agencies across the country might lay in with, or at least "stand down and stand back" from, the forces of civil disobedience when its white people doing the rioting and causing the mayhem. Oh sure, they'll always allow the burning down of black owned businesses and community structures. That's what they've been doing and training for the last about 150 years. They have their addresses in the system already.
I think he's hoping that a constant deluge of bad news for Trump will take the wind from his supporters' sails.

(503 posts)You cant do what they did and not indict, youd just look stupid.
The egg on the face is if they dont get a conviction on Trump. That would be 2 impeachments, one indictment, and no convictions. That happens and the Republicans will paint us whatever color they like and itll stick. Its why these types of things are unadvisable unless you know theres certain 100% victory, and theres no guarantee of that.

(11,451 posts)If they don't it is like saying the country is lawless but if you do and he skates again we also look lawless. So they had better win!!! I really don't know how he can get a jury who is non partial and if by judge he will say the judge is against him, if they rule to send him to jail he will fight to supremes and we know how that will end.
The DOJ knows all this and is probably why they haven't jumped to charge him with something already.
Baggies
(503 posts)If they do but dont win, it looks like a witch hunt.
If they do and win, it still looks like a witch hunt with half the country viewing it as a totalitarian government now in control.
I havent seen an upside to any of this, and I dont see any on the horizon. I would have preferred the Party simply ignore him as he was nothing. But for some reason, people cant stop. Its like theyre obsessed.

(11,451 posts)that he has gotten away with so much when we know if we do something even a tiny bit of what he did we would be in jail.
To me it doesn't matter what side red or blue I get mad when the rich and powerful are able to skate on things.

(6,513 posts)or any kind of purloined docs, in his basement--and he did--then, he has to be charged. Failure to give them back when the FBI tried to arrange it the first time also looks bad. I don't know how discretional Garland can be in this scenario. If we are a nation of laws, and Garland has gone on TV and stated that no one is above the law, then it's coming. There is no excuse for Trump to have done this. He just got caught.
And, now he's looking for the ID of the agents who caught him. Chilling, but there appears to be no excuse. And, sure he will fight; he has the right to appeal the verdict and say what he wants. But, he has made admissions on having the documents, so he's kinda effed right now.
And, although I understand why many posters have said that it makes no difference whether the papers are classified or not, which technically it doesn't, there is still a differential in terms of excuses and punishments for having taken classified docs pertaining to gawd knows what. Under the Espionage Act, one of the punishments is execution.
And, no, I don't think it would come to that. But, what if he ended up on Death Row? He needs to sober up and listen to those attorneys that he thinks he's smarter than. Their client is going to jail, and the only questions are for how long and where. If I were him, I'd be packing up the boat right now.

(6,513 posts)He's still thinks he's a player. He should be indicted as a spy under the Espionage Act. Then, let him plea bargain like any other common criminal. Throw his ass in jail. Then, give his attorneys a copy of the affidavit.
His attorneys may be biting off more than they can chew. I am sure that the DOJ is trying to round up all those possible, but as it goes further, we may have to get on with it.
I don't know how long the threat assessment will take, but it would be beneficial to the prosecution to be able to tell people what exposure of those documents might mean to us. And, that's why we have laws against what he did.
He's already made admissions to having taken the documents.
