Reasons for unsealing the search warrant

My guesses:
1. Judge was defense attorney … skews towards openness
2. Judge is liberal … skews towards openness
3. Judge believes openness serves democracy
4. Judge believes affidavit for warrant was well-founded and will vindicate him for issuing warrant

So … his principles and his own self-interest are aligned.

Fortunately, I don't buy another unsupported conspiracy, so I have no reason to believe he issued the affidavit materials out of fear.

He directed the DOJ to redact it and then show it to him. It will be almost entirely redacted.

None of your reasons are legally supported.

he asked for several different versions of the redacted document. He did say that there were parts that could be shown; did he specify to the attorneys which parts those were?

I'd do like people have suggested: black out the whole thing a la Mueller. Plus, release whatever procedural parts the DOJ is okay with. I suppose that they can play with the redaction, and the Judge did say that he doesn't care if it is useful to the press. So, there's that. But, I am disappointed. because of the appeals that will surely come if the redaction is done really well.

He should act only because it is legally the proper thing to do.
