The initial batch of documents retrieved by the National Archives from former President Donald J. Trump in January included more than 150 marked as classified, a number that ignited intense concern at the Justice Department and helped trigger the criminal investigation that led F.B.I. agents to swoop into Mar-a-Lago this month seeking to recover more, multiple people briefed on the matter said.
In total, the government has recovered more than 300 documents with classified markings from Mr. Trump since he left office, the people said: that first batch of documents returned in January, another set provided by Mr. Trumps aides to the Justice Department in June and the material seized by the F.B.I. in the search this month.
The previously unreported volume of the sensitive material found in the former presidents possession in January helps explain why the Justice Department moved so urgently to hunt down any further classified materials he might have.
And the extent to which such a large number of highly sensitive documents remained at Mar-a-Lago for months, even as the department sought the return of all material that should have been left in government custody when Mr. Trump left office, suggested to officials that the former president or his aides had been cavalier in handling it, not fully forthcoming with investigators, or both.

(1,731 posts)the question should be: "Do you have any more classified documents? Are you prepared to swear to that under oath?"
And start arresting people on the spot if they are found to be lying.
I'd ask anybody who might have had access.

(4,913 posts)This is why I have been so pissed off lately. Trump is now a citizen like you and I. They should be going at him hard and everyone else involved over stolen secret documents. You don't take your time and investigate for years in a situation like this.
This should be an all hands on deck investigation.

(50,949 posts)were seized in February. Their oaths mean nothing whatsoever. A lawyer signed an affidavit promising there were no more after that seizure.
YES. The arrests should have been started a long time ago.
AND, the FBI has recently been questioning tfg employees to see where MORE documents are. They think there ARE more out there.

The F.B.I. has reached out to about a half-dozen people who currently work for Mr. Trump and who might know what documents he may still have in his possession.

(1,779 posts)and "Classified" are two entirely different things. This is more news filler with zero new facts or evidence.
I want to know what he had in his possession that he was definitively prohibited from having, no more word games. Classified documents are not all collected so the markings can be removed when they are de-classified, which is the orange assholes claim. Yes, I realize he is likely lying, but someone needs to show us some real and measurable evidence of the crime, and then promptly charge him if they have said evidence. We are going on two weeks now and nothing has been detailed from official sources. All we get are bait and bullshit articles like this.
If I mattered at all, my message to the DOJ would be let's get on with this and stop messing around. Throw his ass in jail and charge him, or drop it. We have elections to win and we don't need bullshit right now.
Donald Trump is not my focus. We have serious economic and other issues to address publicly, and if this Trump shit is going to end in a waste, we are pissing away valuable news cycles with it right now that could be addressing far more serious subjects just weeks before a mid-term election.
Sorry, but I'm getting really aggravated with this entire thing now. I'm tired of dealing with him, I'm tired of the dead-end scandals, and I'm tired of major issues being ignored. How many articles have we seen this week about how much the Democratic Congress and Joe Biden have accomplished v/s these damned Trump speculation write-ups? They are wasting very valuable time here.

(4,913 posts)This is being handled badly. We already know some of the documents are the highest level of top secret. That's why one of the charges on the warrant involves the espionage act.

(1,779 posts)I was as confident as you are. I have no earthly idea if it is being handled well or not, they are showing us absolutely nothing.
Sorry for the rant, I'm getting really aggravated. We get stung buy this shit EVERY dang time. I'm tired of it.

(37,046 posts)One classified document in his/her trunk there would be no ambiguity about the handling of the situation. No press conference, no higher or lower court ruling, no rotation of high priced liars pleading their case. IT is not being handled well. OTOH DOJ under Garland takes every effort to dot every i.
And why did Jared get 2 Billion from the saudis? Maybe Mitch mcconnel could answer that question. Or gym Jordan, or stefanik etal.

(1,779 posts)assume by what you are saying that you are certain that Trump actually had classified documents that he was not authorized to have and that they were stored in an unsecured location?
I'd like to see the source on that information, because I have yet to see anything but claims from twitter blue-checks and money grubbing media outlets who want me to keep clicking on their links.
Don't mistake my skepticism for a position on the matter, I'm just looking for proof and charges. Almost at week 2 and we have zilch, nothing. Evidence could be there, evidence might not be there. We don't know. And let us not forget, Trump isn't a regular citizen like you, I, or a Private/Seaman/Airman, he is a former President regardless if we like it or not. His security clearances have not been revoked either. Event the word "stolen" is thrown around without regard. Do we know that? No, we don't, and assuming so is us being sloppy.
I'm trying to be realistic here, and things are starting to smell from my vantage point. I'm beginning to lean toward bad news regarding the materials confiscated under the warrant. We can be as sure about these things as we want, but without that evidence, this is all in vain, and it looks really bad.
Let me tell you I would how happy I would be if I'm wrong, but I've been down this path far too many times already. If there was damning evidence in those boxes, we would surely know about it by now. If not, why? And national security is a bullshit answer. We don't need to read the underacted documents he has, let an official come out and say the actual words: Donald Trump was absolutely in possession of classified documents that he was not authorized to have or remove from secure locations, and he broke XX law in doing so. I've heard no official source from the DOJ state anything even remotely similar to that, and I would like to know why.
And I have no idea how to answer your other questions. I'd have to do a lot of reading and research to even know what you are talking about as I am completely unfamiliar with any of that unfortunately.

(34,051 posts)i don't understand the people demanding they "show us" what they took, what was on the list, show us that the docs were top secret or classified.
if they really are classified/top secret and trump shouldn't have them because russia or china might see them then why the hell are some people insisting/demanding *they* be shown the documents. did we all just gain automatic security clearance in order to weigh in as to if those docs really are classified?

(20,678 posts)Failed to keep him in office. There are more staffers out there still keeping his secrets who need to talk. More should he arrested until they tell how these docs were stolen, because he didn't carry those boxes himself. I want to know exactly what vehicle drive or flew them to merdelago, and by whom.

(9,670 posts)And what has he DONE with them while they've been in his possession?
My guess is that he's already wrought more damage to our national security than any of us could ever imagine and perhaps that's why the kid gloves treatment - the implications of apprehending the perp may be more catastrophic than we realize.
Not a reason not to do it, of course, but there's a lot here that does not meet the eye.
