General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsA question responding to a post yesterday by MVD...please read the whole post, my question is later,
the question was "What is the most east and west you have ever been in the US?"
I responded "Eastpoint Maine & Neah Bay Washington".
I should have said the "most east & west ""cities"" in the Continental US" but I failed to do so.
The "continental US" does NOT include Hawaii, Alaska, or any of our territories.
NOW THE QUESTION
Without using ANY search engines, "WHO KNOWS THE FURTHEST POINT EAST, AND THE FURTHEST POINT WEST IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA?
Please I beg of you, if you use a search engine, disqualify yourself from this question. I have incredible belief in the integrity and brilliance of DU posters, and I really believe you will all hold yourselves to the standards I ask.
If you know the answer, post below, if you don't know the answer, I will tell you by noon MDT on Friday.
I look forward to your posts and answers.
I should explain...that includes Alaska, Hawaii & all of our territories.

(84 posts)For the west: You're talking the Westernmost Aleutian island here. I don't know the name and I'd be DQ'ed if I looked it up to find it. They have to move the International Date Line to keep the Aleutians on this side of the IDL, and Hawaii isn't that far west.
For the east: I'm guessing the easternmost part of Maine (same caveats), where Maine juts out into the Atlantic.

That said, it is an amazing place to visit.
What an amazing experience to visit the place where FDR was diagnosed with Polio.
If you ever get close, and have a passport, PLEASE GO.

(12,640 posts)Don't know what the easternmost is. If not somewhere in Maine, maybe somewhere in Massachusetts? I think there's a part of Massachusetts that sticks out pretty far easterly.
I've road/driven up and down the west coast lots of times over my lifetime, my folks loved to camp on the beach.

(3,395 posts)It is a long way west, but you have to remember the maps we look at don't show the longitudinal lines.
Check the globes and try again. BTW...did you know Reno Nevada is further west than Las Angles CA?
Here again, longitudinal lines.

(3,395 posts)There is some differing theories as to what the most correct answer is, but if you use the 180th meridian as the difference between east & west, the Aleutian Islands of Alaska are bisected by that meridian. Therefore, the western-most point would be there, and the eastern-most point would be right next to it.
