Covid numbers up a lot already at my campus

I was a little worried to see the numbers of people who tested positive and after only one week of classes has jumped from a steady rate of about 3 to 4 people each week or two to 14 already. I also received notice from a student that they had missed class because of covid exposure at their job. I told them to not come to class until you know your test result. I just got my 5th shot the last week the Moderna bivalent but Iím not yet fully immune for another week. I taught my first class wearing N 95 the entire time. I just hope I donít end up getting Covid again in, spite of everything Iím doing . As far as I know so far no one else students or faculty are masking at all anymore.

And those are only the people who have told the college that they had a positive test because who knows how many people are actually testing or informing anyone if they do test positive.

4. Yes, I told the students

I am high risk.that I will be masking the entire semester. That is all I can do. Other than quit which I canít do. Last semester they dropped the mask policy and made it optional only three weeks in and I wore my N 95 entire time and did not get Covid at all but the numbers were a lot lower then I think, and the campus was testing us every two weeks.

My flu shot is next after I recover from this one.

30. I don't think that's entirely true

I think a lot of people have a different level of comfort in taking risks than others do.

Covid obviously isn't over.

But we have tools that we didn't have at the beginning and deaths and hospitalizations are reducing like crazy.

I have doctor and nurse friends. They are going to parties without masks now. THey've been vaccinated and had prior infections, and they feel like they are in a good place now.

I wear my mask in crowded environments, but I will take it off in social situations where I know everyone.

In households where people have had prior infections and are fully vaccinated and boosted, I can see why they'd forego their masks.

My daughter isn't wearing a mask to school this year. I know what the risks are with that, and we've decided to take those risks for quality of life. She'll put the mask on if she's exposed for the amount time recommended.

When my 83 year old father got covid he was really really sick. We were worried. But with Paxlovid, he turned around within 24 hours of his first dose. We have the tools to protect the vulnerable.

These things didn't exist in the past.

Of course people are making different calculations now.

43. No, we'll all be fine. We have TREATMENTS now that didn't exist in 2020 or most of 2021.

COVID is NEVER going away. The majority of the population are NOT going to wear masks for eternity. But no one is preventing ANYONE from wearing a mask if they so choose to.

107. What about the 10,000 to 15,000 people dying of Covid each month?

Why weren't they fine? That is a lot of people to lose. What about long Covid?

I know many people who have developed new health issues after getting infected with Covid.

I still wear a mask because it's an easy thing to do and I don't want to risk death or long Covid.

A member of my family died after getting Covid and another family member committed suicide because she had issues after her Covid infection. She was only 30 years old!

49. Right

That's what I said. lol

When I'm sick I don't go out. When my daughter had covid and i didn't, I cancelled in person meetings and didn't go to a party for an organization I work for. I wear a mask in crowded places, especially if I'm among people I couldn't contact if I did test positive bc they're strangers. (And vice versa.) I've been vaccinated and boosted and then boosted again. I'll always respect the person who is more cautious than me and mask/test if they want to.

I bet most people on this board are similar.

It's NOT fuck everyone else. Not even close.

Your expectations for people aren't reasonable.

I still wear my trusty N95 EVERY TIME I GO ANYWHERE!! I'll get my booster as soon as I can and no one is allowed in my apt without a mask. Everyone has been pretty good about it too. No one ever has given me the evil eye for wearing it or maybe they have and I didn't notice. I HATE being sick and I was sick 90% of my life as an elementary school teacher. Classrooms are germ factories.

We are going to an outdoor dinner this weekend prolly with a very small group friends, all vaxed. I hope it is safe. I have not socialized at all except with my neighbor always masked.

11. Definitely eat outside!

2 weeks ago was my 88 year old mom's birthday and my sister and I agreed to take hef to lunch at a small French place we have been to before often and I usually ate outside, even before Covid. So I was stunned to show up and find that my mother was planning on eating inside when there was an empty table outside. We were told we would have to wait and I said OK but my mom was pissed at me. I drew the line and told her through my N95 that I was NOT eating inside, period! She is used to getting her way, at least around me since she is very domineering. When my sister showed up she sided with me and we sat outside. I don't know why she was so stubborn since she has been masking up and vaxxed from the start.

"Don't give in to the maskless!!!" That is my motto now.

I can't afford it. I had to leave teaching early since I was so sick all the time my doctor said the job would eventually kill me. I only eat out if someone gives me a gift card (I am on a severe budget and must save as much as I can for health care bills). I have eaten out 2 times since Covid started and both times were outside.

Due to a lot of health issues, and now never really due to covid and that and also we are conserving finances too. I really miss it though, and I used to eat out a lot at least in my earlier life. I hope you can get take out sometimes maybe. Back when I was healthy etc. my ex and I used to get wonderful burritos at a local place and we ate at lots of great places and in my young life too. I used to love eating so much. Now I try to make a lot of things I eat because it is usually cheaper and yogurt for sure tastes better too.

Thousands are posting their long Covid stories on social media and say itís similar to ME/CFS. Biden is even addressing long Covid with a new task force. The total exhaustion I had last week recovering from Covid was creepy- it finally left but some develop CFS and can barely leave their beds for a year or two.

I am not sure where you got that from. After everything the cdc has done re covid anything they release is not automatically regarded by me nor by many others as automatically accurate. Their website is also pretty confusing and does not make it easy to see even what the positive infection rates are in my county which is in NY. Our local county website is much more accurate I have found.

These are not so called anecdotal reports, these are cases recorded with pcr testing and reported by the college.

I've laid off these kind of posts because some are more vulnerable than others Covid wise and for other reasons. But, dammit, the numbers have been getting much, much better under the Biden administration and to me that is a winning message for Democrats in the mid-terms. Like it or not, people are living life again and there have been no super surges as so often been predicted in the last six months.

Over 60,000 cases per day national total with a current daily death rate of 328. That is still a .5% death rate or 1/200 cases.
Long COVID plus permanent damage is ~10◊ that so 3000 wounded per day, 9,000 death per month and 90-100,000 permanent damage each month. This is far from being contained. I pray that these are hitting 3R to 1D or higher losses on the GOP side. That will be the only way this mess was worth it.

38. My county is bright red

if you look at the Community Transmission rates from the CDC. (168.76 new cases/100,000 people over the last 7 days. 50 in 14 days is my level of safety for removing my mask - we were there for a few short weeks in May.) There's only one county in Ohio which is not bright red as to transmission rate.

(Even the newer, misleading, Community Level is yellow for my county - but red for nearly half of the counties in Ohio - this is the newer measurement which instantly turned nearly the entire country green overnight . . . guess they will have to redefine it again soon since it is no longer sufficiently watered down to provide much of a sense of safety.)

80. I won't argue with anyone taking more precautions!

For me, the 50/100,000 over a two week period is level I'm comfortable with - it's the risk level I set very early in the pandemic for when I would be willing to engage in unmasked in uncrowded indoor activities. It's still where I am comfortable -but anyone who is uncomfortable should take whatever precautions makes them feel safe. I'm sorry you lost your father. I have lost friends, but no relatives.

I'm more concerned about the unknown long-term consequences of COVID than death. The vaccines are pretty good at preventing death or hospitalization. Even though they decrease the likelihood of long-term consequences - we don't have good tools to deal with things like long COVID - let alone those long term consequences we aren't yet aware of.

83. Thank you... There could never be any

Precautions I would not have taken to save my fatherís life. He was negligently infected by a hospital er in December 2021 in the second wave, right before he finally became eligible for vaccination. Because this country deemed that young, healthy people should be vaccinated before him. And many vaccines were thrown out because many of those eligible refused it.

I will not live in peace until they are all held accountable for his death. He and we all were tortured for 10 months from the damage it did to him and then he was literally murdered again by the hospital at the end.

Nor to stop the living hell I went through in the beginning of the pandemic with double c pneumonia when they didnít close everything soon enough and told us masks would not protect us etc. I was infected by my students then on the last day of classes. I have permanent damage from it including heart damage which took over a year to show up so you are right to be worried. But what I went through was nothing compared to my father.

Stay safe.

95. I'm sorry about what you and your father went through.

I was so furious when the formal word from the CDC and Fauci was that masks were not helpful. I've been wearing masks since the first week in March in 2020 - there was plenty of reseasrch out there to support encouraging everyone to wear masks. I understand not wanting to give people a false sense of security by promising they would keep us safeuntil definitive research was available - but given the minimal effort it takes to wear a mask, and the potentially significant benefits, there was more than enough data to suggest mask wearing at least as early as March 2020. (And putting out an incorrect assertion that masks were essentially worthless, when the data strongly suggested otherwise, is unconscionable.)

Post-polio syndrome wasn't known for decades - I expect this to be similar, and by then it will be too late for people to take steps to protect themselves from the damage that was done decades earlier when we couldn't be bothered to wear masks.

47. Here's the reality about schools

Schools have NO business being open and it was a huge mistake to do so.
The results will be absolutely devastating & we're just now beginning to see the early results of opening schools up during a deadly pandemic that is Covid.

And keep in mind, the argument of "we have vaccines now!" is NOT the argument you think it is when many people are immunocompromised and can't be vaccinated. Also, how many people are going to have forever life altering symptoms that are disabling due to "Long Haul Covid"?

It's not only about death.
And remember, 10s of millions in this country don't even have healthcare should they get sick and free Covid test kits are no longer a thing. How are poor & working class people who are struggling to even keep the lights on & pay rent going to afford that in an age of historically low wages?

Sorry folks but I'm pissed. We're not doing enough and the economy is taking a front seat to all of us.

This is just ONE school district. ONE.

KISD COVID-19 cases skyrocketed in 2021-22, data shows

Article --- https://kdhnews.com/news/education/kisd-covid-19-cases-skyrocketed-in-2021-22-data-shows/article_931cab78-3099-11ed-9462-7bddfd6db3a0.html

Cases of COVID-19 among students and staff increased threefold across the Killeen Independent School District during the 2021-22 school year.

More than 6,010 positive cases of COVID-19 were reported among students and staff of the Killeen Independent School District during the 2021-22 school year, according to state data.

The year prior, when the district had a virtual option for students and a face mask mandate, Killeen ISD reported about 1,600 COVID cases to the state for the entire 2020-2021 school year, state data shows.

Some may want to believe the pandemic is over, but as many students, educators and health professionals will tell you, the COVID-19 virus is still on the prowl.

Most recently, according to KISD, another 650 positive cases were reported in the month of August alone.

65. And yet schools have been open for weeks

And cases and deaths across the country have not gone up. Just as they have not gone up since the peak of the Omicron spike in mid-late January.

You keep predicting spikes and they never seem to materialize.

The pandemic is over. We now have endemic COVID to deal with and while it is a problem, it requires different strategies than those we were using to deal with a novel virus in early 2020. Lockdowns and remote learning for children is over, as they should be.

These are not the views of rabid, anti-vax conservatives crashing School Board meetings. They are the views shared by top Democratic Party leaders including President Biden. You might not share them, but that does not make them conservative views.

Cases have basically been going down or have been flat since mid January. A single data point from a single school district is not evidence of the spike you have been predicting for over 6 months.

The pandemic is over, we have not had a spike develop in almost a year. We are in the endemic phase of COVID, which while serious, requires different public health policy and strategy.

Again, a single data point is not evidence of a nationwide increase in cases. The nationwide numbers are public record and available from numerous sources. I use Our World in Data which utilizes John Hopkins data and highly recommend familiarizing yourself with it.

There has not been an upward trend in cases or deaths since the peak of the Omicron spike. Cases have been down to flat since mid January and deaths since the start of February and we have not had a new spike begin to form since November 21. COVID is now in an endemic phase.

Untrue and also offensive IMHO.

Here in Sweden we basically (other than some high schools (gymnasium) for a brief period of time in 2020) never shut down the schools.

Around 1.8 million children ages 5 to 19.

14 total Covid deaths to date, ages 5 to 19, from the beginning of the pandemic until now, a full 2 and half years in duration.

Covid deaths here are extremely age correlated:

The youngest half of our population (so 5.25 million people) has only had 135 covid deaths total, since the beginning.

99.3 % of all Covid deaths are from 40 year olds and above.

98.5 % of all Covid deaths are from 50 year olds and above.

95.9 % of all Covid deaths are from 60 year olds and above.

89.0 % of all Covid deaths are from 70 year olds and above.

And closing schools in 2022 is an absolute insane response to where we are now in covid. It's inconceivable. Kids need schools. Communities need schools. Families need schools.

There is nothing that would be more detrimental to the democratic party than advocating for school closures in the year of our good lord 2022.

I'm not talking about those who cannot receive these vaccines due to an immune disorder. I'm speaking of those who not only refuse to get vaxxed, but they also promote anti-vax propaganda.

By my way of thinking, they are selfish fucks.

The internet is a weird thing. People post laughing emojis without giving a rat's ass about who may be suffering with long Covid, or who may have lost a loved one to it.

This disease killed my brother.

I think people who laugh about Covid precautions, rather than shit posting on the internet, should approach people in real life who have lost loved ones, and then laugh in their faces about the disease that killed them.

Let them see what happens when they do that.

86. Exactly right

My best friend is a teacher in the LA public school system. They had a tough couple of years, but so far this year is going well. They opened mid-August, and their numbers haven't increased.

I'm in the NYC public school system, and here's some data for NYC.

Our cases have decreased 19% from the numbers 2 weeks ago. Schools opened one week ago, and thus far there isn't a bump in numbers. (I know they say wait two weeks to see that bump, so we can check back in next week.)

The truth is, schools aren't drivers of covid spread. They have protocols that limit the spread quite successfully.

Community spread is going down in NYC, which is why I am comfortable allowing my kid to NOT wear a mask in school. There has been one case at her school since they opened a week ago. (Not in her classroom.) The protocol is to inform the parents and have that classroom mask for the ten day period following the positive test.

I forgot to say that a lot of what you say is accurate imo. For the beginning nothing was shut down fast enough or long enough and everything opened up too early due to pressure.

A lot of people replying have no clue how many people have really suffered, I mean lost loved ones etc.

I am not sure what they are doing here since I never mentioned any of this, I guess they are not so happy ultimately with their own behavior otherwise they would not feel the need to attack etc.
