I keep seeing post from folks who are going to leave Twitter because Musk is going to change them $5 a week. Why not leave because Twitter is a cesspool run my a deranged maniac who is looking more and more like a stand-in for TFG? Leaving because of the money sounds a lot like the people who are going to vote for Republicans because of gas prices.

(16,784 posts)But I agree, it is a cesspool.
I contribute monthly to DU because here, we are of a progressive mind set and more informative.
Here we educate, not belittle one another. Sometimes the news is depressing and I need to back off for a few days, but at lest here at DU, my opinion is respected and I respect this community.

In the meantime, I can continue to follow prominent scientists and Democrats.

I cut my teeth in Usernet groups years ago. If you can navigate that without giving up, everything else is a cake-walk.
I won't knock people for doing so, but I never understood the desire to seek inner peace at the expense of insulating myself from the rest of the world. I want the nuts to be able to speak out loud so I can recognize them and understand what they are up to.

(13,568 posts)I don't encounter ANY cesspool on twitter. Don't see anything ugly or dangerous or horrible.
I follow smart people. Some famous, some not. Right now interacting a lot with a Georgetown professor of law, who is highly amusing as well as informative, and a Professor of American History at a top level university (who has become a good friend through Twitter) and others I enjoy a lot.
I never see any of the crap! I'm not sure exactly why that is, but Twitter is what you, yourself make it. Click on crap, see it and become bombarded with it.
And I'm blocking all ads now. I blocked Musk at least a year ago.

(41,831 posts)All my favorite Japanese bands are there and some like An Cafe follow me back! Twitter is how I found out BANDMAID. is coming to San Francisco. Twitter allows me to show off my Monster Hunting from Youthbe! Twitter allows me to hear the favorite music from Mr. Scorpios Radio show! Twitter allows me to get the latest sorry ass score from my Raiders NFL Team. Twitter gives more info from my favorite Disney plus shows, and i have the latest news in the world of JRock! Twitter is more than the hate and vitriol you all want to tag it with, its a constant steady stream into the future and whats next in the world including the January 6th comity and whats legally going to happen to 45 when he gets indicted! Twitter works when you follow the right people like Nancy Pelosi who has an account there, its following George Takei or Marcus Nance or Stephanie Miller! Its having your cake and eating it too! This is why I like Twitter besides following my close friends like JujuChen17 and my new gf LaylaStormy. Twitter is following Thom Hartmann and having him follow you back.Twitter is asking a question to Glenn Kirschner and having respond and then having him follow you back! Twitter is more than having over 500
Friends saying Goodmorning to you each morning because they like what you do or say, even if its in Japanese! Twitter is having world friends from Hong Kong to Cannes France. Twitter is more than Cat photos and lame memes, it can be love and repesct for good friends even one of them shows off their amazing skill with their guitar or share funny videos to make your day that much more fun and interesting. Twitter works for me not against me like Facebook did. I like Twitter, its where all the important people are. Even DU has an account there!

Then I left because I was getting follows by hundreds of Asian hookers (bots apparently). I left about a week before Musk closed the deal. Happy coincidence. I've left FB before too. Can do it again.

(16,945 posts)I didn't log in more than 5 times since I started the account. I read twitter posts if someone posts them. Because it is popular to use as a bulletin board for news, it is going to be hard for some people to cancel their accounts.
I cancelled my account yesterday. I've been meaning to anyway, because I don't use it, but I hope my cancellation, added to many others sends a message that the public is unhappy with the change in ownership, the layoffs, the fake news stories tweeted as fact and so on.

"BuT yOu HaVe To Do It RiGhT," say twitter's addicts.
Thanks, no. The platform has little to offer me that I don't get from 10 other venues. Hell, even DU itself and the much-maligned FB are choked with retweeted crap, so the last thing I need is a way to mainline that shit.

(17,622 posts)...we actually coordinated on twitter and got one of the Bundy group meeting places canceled as they planned to hold it in a building next to a play ground.... and of course these folks planned to be armed. So they had to hold their hate meeting outside in the woods.
