Perry: Soldiers who urinated on dead Taliban just 'kids'
By Brendan Sasso - 01/15/12 09:59 AM ET
Texas Gov. Rick Perry slammed the Obama administration on Sunday for being too tough on a group of Marines photographed urinating on the dead bodies of Taliban fighters in Afghanistan.
"Obviously, 18, 19 year-old kids make stupid mistakes all too often, and that's what's occurred here," Perry said on CNN's "State of the Union."
Perry said the soldiers should be punished but that criminal charges are excessive.
"What is really disturbing to me is the over-the-top rhetoric from this administration and their disdain for the military it appears," Perry said.

(30,252 posts)How many 18-year-olds have been locked up for armed robbery, rape, manslaughter, or outright murder? Are these just a bunch of "stupid mistakes," too?

(113,205 posts)but, let's talk about the reality of putting our people into unjust, illegal and immoral wars based on lies, let's talk about a military0industrial complex out of control, let's talk about guarding oil and natural gas pipelines, etc., etc.

(154,021 posts)has gone on since the paleolithic, that does not mean that we are not bound by a few treaties. Perry wants to be CiC... he'd better familiarize himself with the UCMJ... yes, it is a violation that at the very least should lead to an Article 32 hearing.
But Mr. Perry does remember his days in the AF, flying NON COMBAT missions... (hey at least he served) and probably never even faced an Art 15... I mean he was an officer for god sakes,

(23,664 posts)The worst part is that whatever talking heads are on that show, who know better, probably didn't say a thing to dispute his ignorant statement.

(8,020 posts)Not kids... Marines. Those Marines violated the UCMJ.. and then they video-ed their violations. And then they put the video on youtube.
Both violations of the UCMJ and incredibly stupid.
They have made a recruiting film for terrorism.
"Walk a mile in their shoes"? I walked a LOT of miles in their shoes. In my Marine Corps, we either didn't violate the UCMJ... our officers and NCOs controlled our behavior so we didn't (or punished violations)... or we at least didn't provide proof positive of our violations, and brag to the world about them.
From "Marine Code of Honor".... "Honor requires each Marine to exemplify the ultimate standard in ethical and moral conduct. Honor is many things; honor requires many things. A U.S. Marine must never lie, never cheat, never steal, but that is not enough. Much more is required. Each Marine must cling to an uncompromising code of personal integrity, accountable for his actions and holding others accountable for theirs. And, above all, honor mandates that a Marine never sully the reputation of his Corps." The translation of that last paragraph is "If you do something that embarrasses the Corps... and get caught... your ass is grass!"
The Taliban does terrible things..? Irrelevant... We're the good guys.. remember? They're barbarians. Let's keep that in mind.

(4,607 posts)would be singing a very different song if dead American soldiers had been urinated on by Afghani, Iraqi or any other foreign soldiers.

(13,252 posts)And if 'kids' 'make stupid mistakes', again, why arm them and send them to war?

(154,021 posts)Perry actually served, in PEACETIME. I give him that much credit. But he really forgot that we have a slew of treaties we are bound by.

(14,040 posts)(if I were an 18/19 yr old man) and he'll excuse it? I wonder what Perry would say if we had photos of Afghani's pissing on our dead...I bet that tune would be different.

(28,979 posts)I can't help but think they were trying to prove they were the baddest dudes on earth. What's worse is they probably thought Youtubers would high-five their actions in the video, that it would go viral. They were proud of themselves. That's very sad. How could they be so clueless?
