General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsNow that Election Season is over... smart people need to get together and address abortion rights.
The SCOTUS has done it's thing. Roe is no more.
But it's NOT time to act like abortion is illegal from coast to coast, because it's NOT.
1) Since abortion rights are settled at the State level, abortion rights legislation needs to be job #1 in DEM controlled State Houses.
2) Someone... PP?? Someone needs to organize a convenient way to transport and support women who need to travel a few hours for abortion care. I'm sure funding won't be a problem and I'm also sure that deals can be struck with Corporations like Airlines, Hotel chains, food chains, etc... to support women on their short trips.
Looking at a map, it appears that NO ONE is more than a 90 minute flight from free and safe abortion care.
The most extreme travel distance I can see is around a 450 mile trip from South Texas to NM. Or Miami to NC, 600 miles.
3) Push for a codification of a Roe-like legislation. In fact, I'd try it before the next Congress takes over. I still believe enough GOP'ers might vote YES just to remove this as a political issue in 2024.

(14,818 posts)renewables, jobs, equity, land preservation, sea level , extreme protection etc) are most glaring bc of Repuglican polititians want to diminish, or revoke (further) along with inflation (which looks like is returning to lower levels), jobs, crime (which still is quite lower), drugs (mix of further decriminalization, and legalization), gun/?bullet control (read threads), protecting our LGBTQI, immigrant communities etc.
Of course these are not all the issues - but a whole lot, yeah. (hoo boy)
(and a shout out to our farmers)
ETA Almost forgot ?Alaska to Seattle is a 90 min flight?

(3,074 posts)Ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment (finally) would be a nice start.
Federal codification of Roe v. Wade style legislation would be excellent but needs to occur very soon.
There is a network in place to provide aid and transport for abortion care. I know several women, two of them catholic, who are very active on-line and on Facebook offering services (transportation and funds) to those in need of abortion care.
I appreciate your post and sentiments. I can hardly believe we need to have this discussion in 2022. The bottom line is that we need to elect pro-choice politicians who will make safe and legal abortion a right for all.

(68,469 posts)can get some GOP types to go along with us...but the state houses are insufficient...no state has the right to tell any woman what to do with her own body. Fuck them.
