This is not about a fine. This is about dismantling the Trump Org piece by piece. The guilty verdicts today have opened the doors to criminal tax fraud investigations into Trump. DA Bragg now has something to work with. The IRS could now get involved. Trump could get sued by banks he conned. There is a lot we don't know yet. One thing is for sure, Trump took an ass kicking today.
AG James in her civil case is trying to take control, have oversight of the entire Trump Org. She wants to end it and I would not bet against her.
There are now 4 major criminal investigations into Trump and one civil case. The investigations are not taking too long. Trump is not getting away with everything.
By the way, what Jack Smith did today was an expansion of what Garland had already done in the past. Garland has been investigating certain States, individuals and asking for their records. Garland was not doing nothing like some people falsely claim.

(4,913 posts)Garland has been investigating the fake electors for at least a year.

(11,005 posts)It sounds like Smith's subpoenas are to the county workers who didn't comply with Trump et al's requests for fake electors - presumably to see who requested what from them.

(5,104 posts)even greater legal perils for Donald J Trump and the Trump Org. That sounds reasonable and promising. With you on that.
Still, for the massive level of grifting that was proven by the guilty-on-all-counts verdict, in a scheme that went on for 15 years, a fine of only $1.6 million seem like a slap in the people's face.

(5,104 posts)Perhaps it is time overdue for revisiting the penalties in so-called "white collar crime" cases, as there seems like there is clear inequity of justice here.
I'm happy for the conviction and don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but $1.6 million after all that grifting over all that time? Hard to accept.

We're punching the monster down, and the grown-ups are re-setting the world to normal. It's a relief. And it's not reverseable.

Even the fine I heard mentioned several times on MSNBC today is a joke.
I'll save my cheering for when HE gets criminally indicted.

(4,913 posts)I know you believe Trump will never be indicted. it' s all you talk about even when there is good news. I have a feeling if Trump is indicted you will then move on to saying Trump will never be convicted.

(9,998 posts)I will admit how completely wrong I was, if he is criminally indicted for a fraction of his crimes.
If he is, I still don't believe he will ever spend a day in prison. He might get convicted, or make some sort of deal, but the fantasies I hear about how he is going to jail, I find hard to believe.
For me, if he merely gets indicted, that would be a huge victory for the Rule Of Law. I can't say what a jury will do in the end, but the mere fact that the Justice system made the attempt to hold him accountable, would make me extremely happy, and at least a little satisfied.
He has committed so many crimes during his miserable life, and nobody has even attempted to show him that he's not above the law. So in my opinion, the mere fact he's never had it happen to himself before, would be HUGE.

(9,136 posts)He still has to prove that Trump was ass-deep in the fraud. If none of Trump's capos are willing to testify against him, I don't know how this verdict helps the New York DA.
Guilt by association doesn't really fly in the courtroom.
