But then, fascist mega-donors would stuff her little mouth full of money - and make it alright again.

(6,017 posts)Woke was a term coined by Black Americans. An oversimplification would be, "don't get complacent or think you are safe just because you think you have it good right now".
Woke is definitely a black experience woke is if someone put a burlap sack on your head, knocked you out, and put you in a new location and then you come to and understand where you are aint home and the people around you aint your neighbors. Theyre not acting in a neighborly fashion, theyre the ones who conked you on your head. You got kidnapped here and then you got punked out of your own language, everything. Thats woke understanding what your ancestors went through. Just being in touch with the struggle that our people have gone through here and understanding weve been fighting since the very day we touched down here. There was no year where the fight wasnt going down." - Georgia Anne Muldrow

(3,951 posts)because he'd have to work with "woke" people. I asked him what he meant by 'woke', and he said, "You know, transvestites, queers, and things like that." I was stunned into silence by his ignorant and hateful comment and was trying to restrain myself from throwing my clam chowder at him. In retrospect, I regret not saying that he was wrong and that it's been scientifically proven that homophobes are likely to be closeted, self-loathing homosexuals themselves. It would have been priceless to see his expression as he's essentially being called a queer.
This is a broke 70-year-old guy in poor health who lives alone in an old trailer with SS as his only income, and who has never been on a date with anyone or anything and has no friends. Fk him. I don't have to be nice to assholes. No wonder he has no friends.

(81,220 posts)Thats what they WANT! You, rendered unable to rebut them and challenge their complacent refusal to be fully informed. Heaven forbid a third person was within listening distance and heard no response or counterpoint or rebuttal or fact-checking!
Thats how people get steered toward what Id describe as wrongthink. They dont hear any counter argument or pushback. And therefore, they wind up concluding there IS no opposing position or ACTUAL facts. Well, nobody said anything
must be true then.
DO NOT give the enemy an unearned run! The facts you contribute is the clarity and truth theyd otherwise miss out on. And it helps protect against the damaging spread of misinformation.

(14,173 posts)It took literally decades for a lot of Democrats to embrace the term "liberal" after the word was totally demonized by the right. I have watched as the word has been rehabilittated to a large degree. Even though I understand some more conservative Democrats still do not wish to embrace that label.
And that de-fanging started with the first brave souls not afraid to call themselves liberals and be proud of it. Why shouldn't we be. The Latin root being "liber" meaning FREE. Free choice, free healthcare, free public education, free and fair democratic elections, etc..
I don't know what took us so long.
Now perhaps we didn't even invent the term "woke". Or it was some obscure abbreviation someone made that was immediately latched on by the propagandists of the right to be used as a slur. Much like "open borders", or "defund the police".
But fighting against the term is what Republicans WANT. Why not embrace the term. Throw it back in their faces like Leslieoo7 is doing. Think about it, why would you accept as an insult, someone telling you that you are more awake than they are about whats happening around them?
Don't look up. Don't get woke. Why don't we say, "thankyou and?...."

(6,847 posts)and I do mean back - I'm thinking chaucer's day - the word meant somethng close to magnanimous. I think it was the Knight's Tale which asked the pilgrims to decide "who was the most liberal" and it's pretty clear that politics is not the issue. Who was the most ger=nerous, the least greesdy, the most willing for others to be happy even if personal loss was involved.
Come to think of it ... no wonder Republicans hate it.

Those who stay awake know when danger is near.

(24,282 posts)I'm pretty blunt. I say it's an awareness that the police are murdering unarmed black children without being held accountable. I know it means more than that but that usually ends the conversation.

(529 posts)Ask Republicsne what it means and i doubt many say it is an awareness of racial prejudices and discrimination.
To them, it's anything that disrupts Republican-decided "normalcy", which can cover just about anything.

(5,017 posts)She's the type of person KISS was coined for/about - keep it simple stupid could also be keep it simple [cause they're] stupid. If bothered to be on those types of social media platforms I might be tempted to say "to be woke is to be mature and intelligent, and you are neither of those"
