Im seeing nothing but RWNJ on my feed these days. Multiple posts of Kyle Rittenburg on my feed today. I dont even follow the little murdering RW POS. I keep interacting and liking liberal commentators but still dont see anything from them. Im about ready to give up on twitter. FB has been shit for years. Is there any other social media we can go to? Mastodon looks too complicated. But granted, I havent dug in deep to know for sure.

(1,127 posts)Instead of a single global server like twitter, it's comprised of a federation of servers running mastodon that are all managed by different volunteer administrators.
You join a "local" server that ties into the federation. So you select a server that aligns with your interests : https://joinmastodon.org/servers
If an admin allows idiots to post on their server, the other admins will defederate them so that they are effectively removed. This way, the admins are motivated to moderate the feeds responsibly, (unlike the shitshow that is twitter these days). You are also able to move your account between servers if you wish.
Once you join a server, you'll see separate "local" and "federated" feeds but essentially all feeds are federated - "local" is just that - only posts on your server, whereas "federated" includes everything. There is also a "home" feed that contains only posts by those people you choose to follow.
Otherwise the concept is basically the same as twitter. They use hashtags, re-tweets are called "boosts" and you can reply to posts more-or-less the same way it works on twitter. It's a slightly different user interface but the quality of the postings is significantly better than twitter.
Technically it's a better design. One tip I would offer - set your feeds to "slow" mode - otherwise postings come in so fast it's a bit bewildering. Overall it's a far superior user experience compared to twitter, and it's communally managed instead of being run by some rich jerk.

(3,383 posts)(Im not good w internet stuff). I have a question: how can you tell when an account is not fake? On twitter, they have that blue mark. What do they have on mastadon? For example, I want to follow asha rangappa. How do I know which one is her account? I am trying to find people to follow right now.

(1,127 posts)Some servers require additional steps beyond just an email verification but as far as I can tell, fake accounts aren't a big problem at this point.
Here's who I think you're looking for. She isn't posting anything recently but she does have a lot of followers.
You can search for people by name but I would suggest following people based on what you see in the federated feed. You will soon find like-minded people to follow and they will boost other folks in your home feed who have large followings so you'll see bigger names showing up eventually and can follow them from there. Robert Reich for example posts regularly.
For Android phones, "Tusky" on Android seems preferred over the standard mastodon app, but it's probably about the same experience.

(1,835 posts)All of the important Hollywood, Media anchors (not just liberal analysts), and sports commentariat for my favourite leagues are still on it and nowhere else. So I can't leave without losing their insight. I'd even lose my local legislative bureau chiefs if I quit Twitter. It's a catch-22. I have this vision of Mastodon and Post being Tribe and Seth talking back and forth to each other in a liberal echo chamber. I'm already a hardcore liberal so I don't really need to be in even more of a liberal bubble than I already am in.

(3,569 posts)If yoy are on twitter tell the people in your feed you are bailing the platform. Tell the newspaper on the platform you refuse to support right wing hate and garbage. Then leave.

(7,232 posts)Add to them the accounts that are important to you. You can then sidestep the timeline Twitter provides for you and use the lists to keep up with those accounts instead.

(6,911 posts)Sorry, Elon. Not going anywhere despite your attempts to drive me and advertisers away.
I can block rwnj as fast as they show up on my feed.
They expect Twitter users to be flaky, 280-character nutjobs opposite of RWNJ Republicans.
Bad miscalculation. Progressives are not mirror images of loser RWNJs, they are a whole nother species altogether. 😉

(32,079 posts)I rarely saw any of the right-wing crap on FB, because I made my account private early on, and reacted to posts in my news feed accordingly. After a while, it stopped showing up altogether. Mostly what I see now are friends' posts and cat videos. Which is fine with me.
A lot of folks who used to post on FB have moved to Instagram, like George Takei. Which is kind of funny since FB owns Instagram.

Instagram for me is all about the pictures.

(32,079 posts)You can't look at my profile, or anything else, unless I say you can. And, I sure as hell am not going to "friend" anyone I don't know. I have yet to post anything on Instagram, other than a few comments. Like you, I'm only there for the photos, which are limited as to what can view if they are not a member of Instagram. If you're not on it, you can only scroll back so far...

I don't friend people on FB that I don't have some sort of connection with, either from my former life or my present one.

(17,431 posts)I have my feed set to "Latest Tweets show up as they happen" rather than seeing what the Twitter algorithms decide to show me.
I mainly view Twitter via lists rather than following accounts. I have one for reporters, another for press feeds like AP, Reuters, etc., others for Local News, Ukraine and so forth.
I do have lists for Trump Cult and Fascists and look at them from time to time to see what the talking points du jour are.
I keep the lists private because some users object to be on a list.
I rarely expand threads to see responses from the nuts and if I do I am very heavy on the mute and block buttons.
I observe what is trending, but I'm not usually clicking on the links
I also run an ad blocker.

(8,697 posts)I switch back & forth but prefer algorithms. To get your algorithms good, like, retweet and post on your favorite people - then they will fill up your algorithms.

(589 posts)Just got on Post a few days ago and yes, it's glitchy and having growing pains...but it's a REALLY promising start and probably one of the friendliest social media sites I've used. Mastodon takes a bit of a learning curve and can be pretty quiet, but it's a decent place to gather and post news (the main reason why I'm on ANY of them). Tribel doesn't seem too well-moderated and there seem to be lots of hookers and crypto/finance people on there, looking for their next mark. NONE of them are an immediate or direct replacement for Twitter, but Twitter has been around for quite a while and had the time to evolve into what is was before Eloon Edgelord got his grubby mitts on it. I go on there now just to see how bad it's getting...and I block the MAGA people immediately and use an ad-blocker so Musk doesn't get any value off of my ad views.
I personally think this is a cautionary tale about not relying on any one platform...especially one that can be sold out from under it's members at any point...AND that billionaires should be abolished. That's MY takeaway...others may differ.

(12,436 posts)The algorithm feeds you what you want.
You are fed RWNJ crap because the algorithm KNOWS it gets a rise out of you. The purpose of the algorithm is to draw you in to spend more time on Twitter, to click more tweets and DEVOUR more content.
Guess what? Take your Twitter feed on day 1 and follow a bunch of Cricket teams and players and your feed will be full of Cricket news and player stories and tweets.

(3,383 posts)I purposely look up all the progressive ls that I follow and lilentheir stuff just so that I would see more of it. But I dont see anything progressive. I dont even know who these stupid RWNJ are that are showing up on my feed. Its weird. I even had kyle fricking rottenhouse on my feed and I certainly dont like ANYTHING these whackjobs post. I have never even seen their crap until recently.
WarGamer
(12,436 posts)It feeds Rittenhouse to you hoping you'll madly tweet and click up a storm.
Next time you're on Twitter... remember, the algorithm is watching you and it wants you engaging for as long as possible. When you think of it that way... it all makes sense.
