I have a huge favor to ask of the DU community. It involves the case of a sexual sadist who raped and murdered a 12-year old girl on her newspaper route. This took place on March 26, 1984, and this is the third time that the guy is coming up for parole. See link below:

I am interested in this case for three reasons. The first is that when someone commits a violent crime this offensive, they should not be released from prison. The second is that Cheri's father, a law enforcement officer, was friends with two of my uncles who were BCI Senior Investigators, and I have become acquainted with him since his daughter's death.

The third reason is that, while working at the mental health clinic, one of the people I served was one of Wales' ex-wives. So I know about his history of sexually torturing defenseless victims. Indeed, crimes like this one don't just happen -- there is a history that leads up to it, including where the offender was never caught, charged, and convicted. Wales has destroyed the lives of many people, well beyond murdering Cheri.

It seems he is once again up for parole. This beast murdered and raped a sweet little 12-year-old girl named Cheri Lindsey for no reason, and I don't see why he is even allowed to come up for parole. Not to mention immoral and an abuse of the legal system.

First, the legal system was constructed as it was for a reason. There is no such thing as a person who should never be released under any circumstances. His sentence was given, and when parole is an option there are rules for how the board should make its decision. It is not a popular vote determined by which side can organize the loudest rally.

Second, who your buddy happens to be is irrelevant. The justice system is not to be treated as a system of personal favors, operating like the mafia.

Third, who you treated is also irrelevant. You have essentially named a patient, as there are only so many women he married. That in itself is problematic. Especially when you are claiming to know, on the basis of conversations had while bound to patient confidentiality, of other crimes. Ones that, by the way, are in no way verifiable - the word of one person under a pseudonym on an Internet site.

So, I may send a letter, but it will be about the lobbying effort to convince complete strangers to write in about a matter they had no knowledge of, on these very problematic claims of yours.

When an offender is caught and has a thorough evaluation with a polygraph backup, he will reveal dozens, sometimes hundreds of offenses he was never apprehended for. In an unpublished study by Pamela Van Wyk, 26 offenders in her incarcerated treatment program entered the program admitting an average of 3 victims each. Faced with a polygraph and the necessity of passing it to stay in the treatment program, the next group of 23 men revealed an average of 175 victims each.

23 predators with 175 victims each = 4075 victims. And most of those victims never get justice for what happens to them.

interest in the circumstances, I will note the person you are responding to states that they have been rehabilitated from some crime or another. This could be a case of "hot seat syndrome," or it could be a sincere attempt to identify first-hand credentials. One hopes it is not a person who in any way resembles Wales.

As you know, my credentials are my sincerity. Yet I do have a few lesser ones. Work experience in forensics, evaluations for courts, testifying in more cases than I can remember, as well as formal education. As I have noted several times in my 19 years on this forum, the best instructor I had was J. Reid Meloy, who was Robert Hare's top student. Hare, of course, created the checklist for psychopathy. Reid was the forensic psychologist who testified against Richard Allen Davis, the shitstain who kidnapped, rapped, and murdered 12-year old Polly Hannah Klaas in 1993. Perhaps the person you are responding to thinks Davis could have been redeemed and made a contributing member of society. I will go on record here as saying that he could not, any more than a rabid dog could become a cuddily family pet and good with children.

By the way, Reid is a top consultant with the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit, and we might well see him involved in the Idaho case.

People interested in this general topic would do well to read the books by Michael H. Stone, a top forensic psychiatrist. A good start would be his "The Anatomy of Evil," which presents a scale for identifying those that can never be safely released in society. He uses the word "evil" in a non-religious sense, but rather about what constitutes the worst of the worst. Those seeking greater information can study the human brain, its chemistry and pathways. I'll note that if one of the most dangerous offenders did somehow redeem themselves, they would take full responsibility for their crimes, including fully accepting they have zero right to be released from incarceration while alive.

Similarly, I'm against the death penalty. If someone killed someone close to me, emotionally, I'd want the death penalty for them. Heck, if they intentionally hurt my dog, I'd want the death penalty for them! But I also think society would be better off not having a death penalty, at least as long as there is any risk of it leading to an innocent person being executed, which there clearly is. So while I would still feel my emotional response, I would not start rallying for the death penalty... because another part of me believes that, in the bigger picture, it's not a good thing (I know some disagree). I similarly feel that it is probably not a good thing for the justice system to take into account second-hand knowledge of alleged (not tried or proven) additional despicable behavior on the part of a convict in adjusting their sentence. As for this case, I'm not trying to be a murderer's friend. He has already been denied parole twice. It should be denied again. But for reasons that don't go further than what is actually already known by the justice system, which indeed already seem sufficient. A justice system that can be swayed by unproven hearsay could ultimately be a dangerous thing for many people.

One common sense question for you to consider -- and I ask this respectfully: Do you think there is ANY chance that this was Wales first offense?

I'm against the death penalty, too. Not that some don't make a good case for it with the crimes they commit. Instead, I had a 40+ year friendship with a man who faced the death penalty. He was incarcerated for 20 years for a crime he did not commit. Recently, the man who commited the crime my friend was incarcerated for confessed to it on his death bed. On a purely volunteer basis, I did work with my friend's defense team. There are good reasons to think several investigators knew my friend hadn't killed anyone.

People here that know me -- including both those who like and dislike me -- are aware of this vase, and my connection. On one of the covers of the books on my friend, his long-time friend Coretta Scott King calls his case the most important habeas corpus case of the last century.

In later years, I helped coordinate with my friend on assisting the wrongly convicted. More, his legal team has been willing to assist me when there is a local conviction that is okay, but the sentence unreal. Most recently got a kid out of Attica who had served a year in hell, and faced a life sentence.

Hmm. Well, "offense" is a broad term. Is it his first murder? I don't know the details of the case or the man, but everyone who commits murder, whether once or multiple times, at one point has to have done it for the first time. Whether he has actually raped or murdered a minor--or anyone--before, I really don't have grounds to say.

Certain crimes cry for a life term and certain convicted criminals can never be safely released into the community.

On a visit back one time, a woman my age mentioned J—— Y—— and my head snapped up. She said softly that she thought there wasn’t a woman of our age who didn’t remember that case. It had been 30 years by then. It’s now been over 60 years, and I still remember that child’s name. It could have been any one of us, and we all knew it.

Aging people still have to show up to attest to the fact that the Tate-LaBianca murders irrevocably damaged their lives and they will never be whole and that none of the Manson Family should ever be released. Charles Manson died in prison in 2017, I think.
