I'm astounded by the arrogance of a supreme court that demands safety and security for itself even as it hands down extremist rulings which put the safety and security of HALF of the population in jeopardy: girls & women - by rescinding the federal right to safe abortion. Their rulings, both those handed down so far (Dobbs) and those planned, are too extreme to get through congress or pass muster with most voters, which is why they are being funneled through this heavily compromised court by special extremist interests.
This court, already packed to the gills with extremists pushed by the Federalist Society, Judicial Crisis Network and others, and via Senate shittery from Mitch McConnell, is incapable of handing down anything even resembling justice in the United States. They now have their sights set on decimating human rights of our LGBTQ citizenry and removing not only the federal right to safe abortion, but also any federal right to contraception - in order to make a handmaid's tale style of US society a sadistic reality, foisted on a population largely at odds with such extremism.
Speaker Pelosi, AOC and other Democrats in congress suffer threats and injury to themselves and their families which are much more egregious and life/health threatening than anything any justice has suffered, and the reason this is happening is because Democrats in congress are trying to protect the human rights that this extremist-packed court is taking away or plans to take away. What about their security? What about the security of Americas girls, women and LGBTQ citizens whose lives and safety this extremist court has put in jeopardy or is planning to put in jeopardy with their extremist rulings?
How arrogant is the United States Supreme Court and its leader, John Roberts, to demand security and safety for themselves, even while handing down rulings that DENY these same rights and freedoms to half (or eventually more) of our US Citizens (girls, women and LGBTQ persons).
The arrogance is ASTOUNDING. This court does not - as it denies over half of this country safety, human rights, and personal security - deserve these rights itself anymore than the rest of us do. If girls, women and LGBTQ citizens do not deserve full health care, safety and security, human rights and freedoms -- than neither does any member of the Supreme Court.
The only thing truly supreme about this court is its demanded privilege to have security, while it denies the same to millions of others in this country. The only thing supreme about this court is its arrogance and indifference as it puts the lives of millions in jeopardy, denies them human rights and seeks to deny full healthcare to half or more of us.
And thats about it. This court cannot be 'packed'. It's already packed. It cannot dispense justice. In fact, that is not why most of the so-called justices sitting on it were pushed there. This court can do nothing but hand down dangerous, extremist rulings that most of America disapproves of and which cannot pass our law making body: congress. So the court has taken on legislating from the bench, as JCN and other John Birch Society-style and other worse and more extreme organizations have and continue to directly influence them to do.
The US Supreme court must be expanded to 13 justices. It must be held to strict ethical standards which are at once enforceable and immune to congressional manipulation. It must be subject to term limits and case lotteries so that when JCN and others file their passel of amicus briefs in order to push cases onto that court so that 'their' so-called justices can rule on them in the manner JCN wishes them to - these court manipulating outfits will have no knowledge or guarantee that the justices hearing their manufactured cases will be those friendly to their extremist cause. Then and ONLY then will this court be even near capable of dispensing anything resembling 'justice'.
Meanwhile, they are an unelected, extremist, manipulated, unaccountable body of lifetime appointees seeped in privilege, hypocrisy, and a bottomless lack of ethics.
"Supreme", my ass. I don't think so.

(3,074 posts)Women should not respect anything about this damn country until they are no longer second class citizens and have equal rights. Especially health care rights and that includes contraceptive care and abortion.
I know that I won't.

(8,809 posts)It actually started with Reagan, who was corruptly "installed" in 1980. HWBush and cronies actually committed TREASON to get their Presidential candidate into the White House..............
And like you said, the 2000 and 2004 elections were total corrupt frauds by the same group(s) to ramrod W.............
Throughout the entire 40+ years were the same group in the shadows......HWBush/Cheney/Rumsfeld/Pearle/ Wolfowitz/ etc etc etc

(8,809 posts)A few months before the Reagan/Carter election, Bush's crowd went to the Ayatolah of Iran. The Iranians were serious enemies of ours and held 20? Americans hostage. Carter had been thru months and months of negotiations with their leader to release the hostages. Behind Carter and the U.S. government's back HW and cronies contacted the Ayatolah? and told him if he released the hostages before the election it might help Carter win, and if he waited until after the election to release them they would reward him more handsomely.....
Then, once Reagan was in office, they sold Iran a lot of weapons in thanks for delaying the release of the hostages.............Iran, who was an arch enemy of the U.S., fired one of the rockets that HW, (who was really running everything) had supplied the Iranians with in the arms deal. As I recall, the rocket was fired by Iran at one of our Navy's ships killing a couple of dozen U.S. Sailors. Many sailors on the ship who first reported it happening wondered where one of OUR missiles came from that hit our ship. HW immediately stated it wasn't one of our rockets, but the french's or some other country. The sailors said "we saw it incoming and certainly know OUR weapon systems and that was one of OUR rockets".........There was a giant cover up. Then, the Bush administration went around congress when he wanted to sell weapons to the Contras?. The entire Congress explicitly told him NO. He went ahead and covertly sold weapons to them anyhow. There were countless times, (just as they later did during the W regime that they did things that like during the HW regime fit the description of Treason and Sedition...........
The Republican's for decades have tried to put all their nefarious deeds behind them and just forget it ever happened.
Some one once said: "You may be through with history, but history ain't thru with you....."
Just wait for the future years when more and more about Trump and the Republican Senate's dealings are revealed.
As Pelosi said, years ago........All roads lead to Putin..............

(17,342 posts)FDR floated that trial balloon in 1937, and it backfired badly, which is partly the reason for heavy Democratic losses in 1938. And it invites Repug retaliation next time they get the White House...packing the court with 15, 17, 19 justices. No one here wants that.
Look, I'm disgusted with this SCOTUS as anyone, but this isn't the solution.
Justice matters.
(6,925 posts)There is none other? If you don't EXPLAIN the reasons (cited in the OP) to the voters they will not 'get it' and get angry at Democrats to the point of voting against them in 2024??
Maybe if public pressure is applied to solve that injustice, not doing it would result in the defeat? It's not the 1930's anymore. Means of communications are not the same at all.
What do you propose should be done? Nothing?

(35,043 posts)Simply because of these five.
So if Alito and the others make a ruling, and states make new laws saying something is illegal because of that. Abortion now. Quite possibly sodomy laws OR "something else to do" laws. Then we should, no must, strive to serve in juries just to say "not guilty".
That is something we can do.
Justice matters.
(6,925 posts)Jury selection is totally random, and the selection process is too good at detecting biased potential Jurors.

(35,043 posts)And the ones doing the selection process is humans, not some omniscient angel.
And I'm hoping we expand the Supreme Court too.
Justice matters.
(6,925 posts)Over "politics" ...
It takes a simple majority (50+1) of Senators to confirm nominees.
Maybe someone with POTUS or VP... positions could "convince" Manchin and SINEMA women's health, rights to their own body freedoms, and security matter more than any "other" agenda in 2023?
jimfields33
(15,767 posts)I cant see that happening.
Justice matters.
(6,925 posts)The President nominates someone for a seat *(doesn't have to be a vacancy)* on the Court and the Senate votes to confirm the nominee, which requires a simple majority.
In this way, both the Executive and Legislative Branches of the federal government have a voice in the composition of the Supreme Court.

Voila. Could happen if the willingness to protect women's right to decide themselves what they want to do with their own life was a priority. (Freedom...)

(580 posts)There have been as many as 10 and as few as 5.
It would make sense to me that just based on increased workload that there should be more, but I'm sure there is some really "filibustery" reason why things should stay fucked up.
If there was a law firm that consisted of the partners Barrett, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, Thomas, Roberts, and Alito would they be known as a force to be reckoned with, or a den of shysters.
It's kind of hard to expect justice from this court when 2/3rds of its members are religious whack jobs that believe integrity is optional especially when it does not align with their fantasies.

(22,791 posts)enjoyed. Turning the Supreme Court into an arm of the Republican Party defeats the entire constitutional system of checks and balances. We need to expand the court to bring it back into balance.

willing slaves to the Corporations.........CITIZENS UNITED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That was one of the biggest decisions that could forever doom Democracy......Mostly, it opened the door for Corporations and private Donors to Invest unlimited amounts of money to Republican Candidates election funds.........I'm pretty sure it also allowed foreign oligarchs and countries to invest money in our elections........
Russia > "Russia's NRA" > U.S. NRA > Trump and Republican Senators, house members, governors and Republican Senators running in State elections..........among other money coming from China, etc

(3,321 posts)Wonderful post, I agree.
The court needs to be balanced. There can be little meaningful justice with the smug, elitist, right wing injustices, monopolizing the court.
Their bias is obvious, in their ignorant, oppressive, disingenuous decisions, that smack of their personal righteousness, based on their religious beliefs and indoctrination.
Their archaic opinions are not relevant to the times and the majority of the citizenry. They need to be opposed by diluting their opinions with more liberal and truly unbiased, non political persons.
