But the poll offers warning signs about those proposals, showing they remain broadly unpopular among the same voters that delivered a sweeping landslide for Republicans last fall.
A Florida GOP plan to ban abortion after six weeks of pregnancy, a much stricter rule than the states current 15 weeks, is opposed by 75% of voters, compared to just 22% who back it.
DeSantiss move to allow unfettered concealed carry of guns is even more unpopular, with just 21% supporting it.
Powerful majorities of Sunshine State voters in the poll also support a constitutional amendment to legalize recreational use of marijuana and oppose DeSantiss plans to halt efforts to increase diversity in public colleges and restrict discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity in schools.
Many voters we spoke to are not so thrilled about some of DeSantiss most recent proposals in his war on woke culture, Binder said.

(27,435 posts)DeSantis won by a lot. He believes he has a mandate to do what he wants.
Now theyre paying attention? Im trying to muster up some sympathy for Florida Republicans and for the Democrats that crossed over. Its not happening.

(17,526 posts)He no longer faces reelection as governor, so the real DeSatan has emerged. I can guarantee you that this Floridian was never fooled by the man. I always thought that he was cut from the same cloth as Dick Scott, but I was wrong, he is worse than I imagined.

(66,310 posts)This is exactly like that woman in Tennessee, or where the hell ever, who complained that her Republican governor and Republican legislature cut Medicaid for her state, leaving her without medical care or the medication she needed.
She was asked if she voted for the Republican candidates who all vowed to cut Medicaid. She answered yes, and when asked why, she hung her head and said: "I guess I just always vote Republican..."

(7,277 posts)The GOP sought to get voters by leveraging hate and resentment. It worked. And now they have a loyal base they can literally screw over who will still vote for them because they hate the right people.

(7,277 posts)I actually ran into a dude the other day ranting about the Democrats wanting to cut SSI and Medicare. When I pointed out that Democrats wanted to preserve or even expand those programs and it was REPUBLICANS who want to cut them, he said "well, that's what the fake liberal news says."
How do you fix that?

What's it going to take for people to wake the fuck up and realize that they're being lied to 24 hours a day through multiple streams?

(24,365 posts)And I think they are largely the younger people (40 and younger) that work the enormous service industry in this state, from food servers to the Disney and other theme park employees to the entirety of the tourism industry.
They can't afford to take a day off to go vote or they are just disengaged. That's certainly not unique to Florida, but it does have a massive number of younger people working jobs that are paycheck to paycheck.
The retirees are the ones who have nothing better to do on election day, so that's why DeathSentence won by such a large margin last time. That and the fact that Crist was a shitty candidate.

(8,231 posts)If enough people actually paid attention to what these a-holes in Tallahassee do, I have no doubt more people would turn out for Democratic candidates. Instead, we're stuck in a situation where only roughly half the state actually votes.
I recall reading articles of people that didn't even know about the state's abortion ban only to show up to a clinic to find out when they actually needed one. I imagine that same scenario applies to many other issues.

(46,698 posts)Florida has a way of keeping residents in a state of anxiety. Either you're trying to find a way to stay afloat on low wages or fixed incomes or worried that someone is going to take their anger on you by pulling strings to target your children. It forces insecure people to rely on the grapevine and reinforces tribalism. Which means, that everyone gets their information through gossip.
One of the reasons I have distanced myself from the people in the community, is that I sensed the pattern. They try to introduce anxiety points to see what makes you jump. The more they get to know you, the more they know your anxiety points. And then they intentionally use it to reel you into their "safe circles."

(3,213 posts)So those policies being unpopular is rather meaningless, since people will still vote for the fascists who are pushing them.

(11,447 posts)Means paying taxes to help the poor. They love the no taxes there. And I wonder if most of the older folks living there don't care about schools or banning books because it doesn't affect them.
My very liberal neighbor is selling his house here in Oregon to move to Florida after spending the last 3 summers there. He will probably pick a bluer area because he is very outspoken politically. Him and his wife are teachers, I said how will you be able to handle that? He said he is not sure.

(21,738 posts)That is why the GOP is so hellbent on labeling things as "woke" or "liberal" or "socialist".
Most voters don't take the time and effort to delve deeply into issues. They rely on shortcuts in their thinking, including simplistic slogans and labels.
