…lose their minds?

Does anyone who speaks in tongues, or anyone who listens to that gobbledegook, claim to understand what is allegedly being “said”?

They are not people with good critical thinking skills. It is comforting for them to believe that someone has all the answers. The same way children are comforted believing that their parents are all knowing and all powerful. It’s not until they begin to function for themselves they question their parents’ knowledge. These folks never got to that stage. They still need that all knowing person in their life.

…next to impossible for me to understand how adults can get sucked in by such obvious bullshit. Regarding those who are susceptible to it as never having reached emotional or intellectual adulthood makes it somewhat less baffling.

The 4th being formal operations.
“The formal operational stage begins at approximately age twelve and lasts into adulthood. As adolescents enter this stage, they gain the ability to think in an abstract manner by manipulating ideas in their head, without any dependence on concrete manipulation (Inhelder & Piaget, 1958).”
It’s being able to think about ideas.

…Piaget, of course. Just never thought about it that way.

Even when I was fairly young, 8-10, I remember seeing televangelists and thinking they were full of shit, although I did not express is that way then.

And I’m never sure whether to feel sorry for, or scornful of, people who are so pathetically gullible.
