(33,570 posts)Is bad about selling data.
But they are not controlled by an advisarial government.
We are handing China the means to hurt us.
I am not okay with that.

(3,003 posts)China is going to get that information either way. Either they put in the effort to collect it themselves, or get it from another company that collects it - Either by purchasing the information, or by a partnering with that company.
It's why you're seeing a lot of hate sent towards them, and crickets about US companies. Because it's not really about data security here. Its because US companies want to keep selling it off or leveraging it, and they can't do that if China can just collect it themselves.

(1,327 posts)we are taking our eye off the ball. US farmland and other agricultural property is being bought up by foreign investors from China. That SHOULD NOT be allowed. Foreign investors are also buying US real estate and turning them into rental properties and short term rentals, driving up housing costs and making it difficult to impossible for young people to afford a home.
Those two issues are so much more important to me than stupid TikTok and I have a feeling that they will ban TikTok, brush off their hands and be like, yup, we solved the problem, ignoring the REAL problem.
edhopper
(33,570 posts)negate the other.
It's like saying why are we worrying about banning books when they are making abortion illegal. Both are problems that need to be addresses.

(3,003 posts)Hilariously, FB has extensive data sharing arrangements with Chinese companys. So a lot of that super-duper private information we're trying to prevent China from collecting can instead be collected on their behalf by Facebook.

So... Yeah. This is why half assed attempts focusing exclusively on TikTok because "Chyna!" are a load of shit. They'll get that data one way or another, either collecting it themselves, or by some partnership with another company. Lashing out against TikTok does fuck all to protect a users data - All it's protecting is other companies economic self interestm their ability to collect that data for the express purpose of selling to other companies (Ie, TikTok) or to leverage access to that data to form a economic partnership.
