Rep. Tim Burchett, a Tennessee Republican, described the school shooting in his home state as "a horrible, horrible situation," but it's not something he thinks Congress needs to address.
"We're not gonna fix it," he told reporters Tuesday. "Criminals are gonna be criminals."
Burchett said Congress doesn't have a real role to play in the aftermath of the Christian school shooting in Nashville, where an attacker killed three 9-year-old students and three staff members. Lawmakers would only "mess things up," he said.
"I don't think you're gonna stop the gun violence," Burchett said. "I think you gotta change people's hearts."
When someone is determined to kill, there's not much that can stop them, he said.

He is saying that he is not up to the task of ensuring a better America.
He is telling us that laws are useless because of law-breakers.

There's a reason they call them Abrahamic religions.

(3,687 posts)Indeed, but I know of no churches calling for more child-sacrifice.
There are churches that bless guns.
There is a first-world nation that refuses to do anything about blood-lust in the citizenry.
The a-brahamic religions have strayed too far from the strict 'do-no-harm' traditions of the Vedic scriptures of the religion of Brahman.

(6,144 posts)This is like giving gasoline and matches to an arsonist, and then saying that arsonists gotta burn stuff, what can we do?
How about enacting tough gun laws, including a ban on assault style weapons, gun licensing and background checks, chain of custody for guns, mandatory gun safety training, approved and required gun storage cabinets, and strict penalties for illegal guns.
These are just a few of the things that can be done...Tennessee doesn't do any of these.
No wonder that guy doesn't believe gun violence can be stopped!
If changing people's hearts worked, there wouldn't be any crime. How realistic is that?

(845 posts)Well why in the world would you give them the tools to commit crimes. Politicians are gonna be politicians. Until these jokers lose a loved one they wont budge. I would never wish something bad would happen to someone but Im having a hard time keeping from it right now

(3,292 posts)and allow systemic gun violence aimed at children to simply continue as is.
There's certainly a lot of "that can't ever work in this country" pablum being consumed by dogmatic idiots like him, and them immediately spit back up as tired variations of the "well, what if/about...???" routines.

(25,951 posts)What Burchett is saying is that he is unwilling to make laws addressing criminality. He should be fired and replaced with someone willing to DO THEIR JOB.
