...............please consider this:
_______________________________________________________________________________________
The U.S.A. has been through far worse events than Donald Trump stealing documents as President of the U.S.A.
1. CIVIL WAR 2. WORLD WAR 1 . WORLD WAR 2 ,GREAT DEPRESSION IN THE 1930s, WATERGATE and NIXON, .....................................and so on and on and on. ................
Donald Trump, former President stealing documents and being President of the United States is.
............................. NOT THE WORST......................................................................................
_________________________________________________________________________________________________
FAR FROM IT. YES, TRUMP IS A BAD GUY WHO NEEDS TO BE PROSECUTED AND PUT INTO JAIL........BUT
IF YOU CAN FIND THE MATERIALS IN SOME LIBRARY.......
.READ UP ON THE ....CIVIL WAR in the 1860S.....WHEN ABE LINCOLN WAS PRESIDENT.....................
..IN THE 1860s...NO MODERN MEDICINE AND MEDICAL PROCEEDURES AND MEDICAL DOCTORS ALSO, .......
FAR GREATER PERCENTAGE OF SOLDIERS IN CIVIL WAR WERE KILLED...................
etc, etc, etc.................................................................................................................................... .
...........................That is probably the .......WORST...........AND WE SOMEHOW SURVIVED........
"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed." DWIGHT D EISENHOWER, speech April 16, 1953:

(16,888 posts)I graduated from high school in the 60's - sweated the Vietnam thing - voted for Nixon in '68 (born & raised in a Republican home
:eyes - McGovern in '72 - watched REPUBLICANS march into the Oval Office and tell Nixon 'it's over!'
Where are these 'honorable and decent' Republicans now? They're hiding behind a wall of $$$$$$$ - money they can have by being re-elected and voting what the "donors" want - not what fairness, decency, and justice would demand.
These are sad times, and the only way we can work our way out of them is to use the power of the vote and get a government 'of the people, by the people, and FOR the people." It's just that simple........ (yeah, let's see us make it happen!).

(32,356 posts)I loved my Grandpa, I believed in him, and I know he was proud to pay his taxes and vote, as a Republican, for pretty much his entire life. My Grandpa was an Eisenhower Republican.
But Grandpa passed away before Reagan came in, and he never saw the evil that we're seeing today. There's absolutely no comparison to the "old" Republican Party that consisted of good loyal Americans. They held their heads high and came forward to be smart, patriotic leaders. Those leaders are gone, just like my Grandpa. The last good Republican President was Dwight Eisenhower. And that's the truth.

(35,197 posts)That's far worse.
And because of "need" and politics it was only ruled wrong--with no consequences--years later.
You don't just toss people in prison and tell the courts, "Whatever, we'll bring charges later, when we get around to it--we're busy, screw liberty we have a democracy to defend."

(619 posts)I'm not sure the country could have survived. At the very least Washington would have had to be abandoned because it would have been entirely surrounded by hostiles. Could Lincoln and government officials even escaped? The incredible measures Lincoln had to use to put down the rebel sympathizers in Maryland 1861 were likely justified.

(82,849 posts)In every one of these situations that the United States hasfaced, there was never a moment when the nation had doubts as to whether the President stood with the country. Anyone who thinks that Donald Trump wouldn't possibly have sold the country for a mess of pottage is either extremely foolish or irretrievably stupid.

(42,676 posts)The world gyrates back and forth over the last 300-500 years between democracy and various forms of hierarchical rule: royalty, authoritarians, enlightened despots. Revolutions intervene, masses revolt. It's our turn.

(16,888 posts)it was 6 Republicans that went into the Oval Office and (yes, in these times it is SO hard to believe) had the bal... er, courage to tell him: "You do NOT have the votes - you WILL be impeached."
Today's Republicans - they elbow each other to get a better spot to plant their lips on that fat a$$.......
Everyone knew he'd be impeached. They told him he would be convicted in the Senate.
MyOwnPeace
(16,888 posts)The Republicans went into the office to meet with Nixon - they told him 'YOU DO NOT HAVE THE VOTES!'
So, pick your 'situation' - did they tell him 'he'd be impeached' - or did they tell him 'he did not have the votes.'
Either way you choose to phrase it - they told him HE'S DONE!
Can you find one Republican that has the bal...., er, courage, to tell that to tRump now?
THAT is my point: They did then - they won't now........

(619 posts)People so regularly say impeached when they mean removed from office. Being impeached in the House was a foregone conclusion at that point. Nixon even joked about it! His only question was where he stood in the Senate.
MyOwnPeace
(16,888 posts)I don't remember Nixon 'joking' about it - but I certainly appreciate your consideration regarding 'impeachment' as opposed to 'kicked to the curb!'

(46,016 posts)Inciting an insurrection could be a worse crime, but Trump owns that, too.
Personally, Im most excited by the various crimes related to the documents because I believe theyre the ones most likely to land him in prison Hes a menace that needs to be put where he cant start another insurrection.

(66,096 posts)the post-Reconstruction Era was.
White people could march out into public, kill anybody they wanted to, basically, laugh and smile and dance around, and pose for pictures with the murder victims, and get away with it. They could go into court and say: Yep. Yer gol-danged right! I did it, an there aint nothing you can do about it!
And walk free.
At least today, our societys murderous monsters either go to prison, commit suicide-by-cop, or do the deed themselves. They dont get a parade and the key to the city.

(50,453 posts)Trump didn't take those documents because top secret information is fun to read. And he didn't take it to remember his fun time in the White House - that's what the silverware is for. Trump took that information for one of two reasons: to blackmail the US into not going after him for his corruption, or to sell.
Our allies don't need to buy American classified information. They can just ask and get whatever they need.
If he sold it, it was to a power hostile to US interests.
If the president of the United States were found to have sold national security information to an enemy of this country, the damage will be so insurmountable we are going to have to start the process of correcting it with incarcerations, executions and the permanent termination of the Republican Party.
The United States has never been in a situation where a former president needed to be stood up against the wall, but there's a first time for everything.

(99,915 posts)The Fox News / AM radio / podcast sphere is the real problem facing our country. Trump is a useful idiot to them. When they no longer need him, they'll cast him aside for someone more useful to their cause. This is what we need to stop.

(53,003 posts)You're comparing the fact of medical knowledge in the mid-19th century to a President stealing records? One has nothing to do with the other.
I personally don't think his document theft is the worst of his behavior. That would be the attempted coup.

He taught the republicans how to cheat and now from state to state they don't care about issues its just winning at any cost. And while the wars you speak of were bad, at least america bonded together over them. I haven't counted but if you add up the covid deaths he caused and all the shootings encouraged by his I can get away with shooting people on 5th ave talk it just might be more than the wars.
