NYTimes: Confusion and Then Anger Heard in Audio Recordings of Calls to Cruise Ship Captain

“Schettino? Listen Schettino. There are people trapped on board,” the coast guard captain said.

“Commander, please… ”

“No, please,” the coast guard captain said. “You go on board, this is an order” he said, later adding: “There are already dead bodies.”

“How many?” Mr. Schettino asked.

“I do not know. One I know. One I heard. You are the one who has to tell me how many there are, Christ!”

“But you realize that it’s dark and here we see nothing…”

“Do you want to go home, Schettino? It’s dark and you want to go home? Go up on the bow of the ship on a rope ladder and tell me what you can do, how many people are there and what they need. Now!”

“All right,” Mr. Schettino said. “I’m going.”

"We waited for the abandon ship (instruction).

"We waited for it to be called and it was finally called after some of the life boats were deployed. We had reached such a tilt that we couldn't deploy any more life rafts or life boats on the port side so we had to run round to the starboard side to get onto a life boat.

"Some of us went one way, some of us went the other. The people who didn't go the way I went didn't make it to a life boat, they had to swim.
