USNS Harriet Tubman... A Worthy Name

From Stars and Stripes (excerpts):>

US Navy to christen oiler named in honor of Civil War hero Harriet Tubman

A second U.S. Navy ship will bear the name of a celebrated abolitionist who was the first African American woman to formally serve in the military during the Civil War, Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro recently announced.

The future USNS Harriet Tubman follows a tradition of naming John Lewis-class oilers after civil rights activists, Del Toro said in statement Sunday. The first ship to bear Tubman’s name was a Liberty vessel built during World War II, the Navy said.

At least 70 men, women and children escape slavery while conducting them along the Underground Railroad, a network of safe houses and passages that led to freedom.

9. I can honestly...

...it's the most moving mural I've ever experienced.

Hidden around the side of a small park, off of a main street. Perfectly crafted, a glorious tribute to one of America's most beautiful souls.

14. Some Day

Some day I plan on visiting New England again. I want to visit the USS Nautilus after having attended sub school in '84. But I also want to visit the Mystic Seaport and USS Massachusetts battleship. I'll be adding this mural to the list of things to see.

15. Just to be clear...

...the mural and the Harriet Tubman museum are in Cambridge Maryland, not Cambridge Massachusetts.

A nice Goodwill Tour of Florida ports, along with Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia and South Carolina would be fitting.

20. Too bad my dad's gone.

He ran the tanker fleet for MSC in the 80s and 90s. He had a good fleet, great crews and command staff, but not a fleet of the USNS Lewis, Milk, Marshall, Ginsburg and Tubman.
