According to a recent PPP poll, in a hypothetical Obama/Romney/Colbert matchup, Obama gets 41%, Romney gets 38%, and Colbert gets 13%.
It's not surprising to me that liberals and moderates would consider to vote for Colbert. Hell, I would seriously consider it. But, 15% of Colbert's hypothetical voters describe themselves as very conservative, and 25% call themselves at least somewhat conservative.
How? Just how? Is their sense of irony that nonexistant or do that hate Romney that much?

(1,532 posts)I was astounded and aghast not too long go when I encountered a post or comment to a blog (wish I'd have nailed down the details) wherein the poster said, "It took me about 6 months to figure out he wasn't really a conservative." Honest to God.

(18,219 posts)They either do not want to tell the pollsters who they are voting for, or they are so stupid that satire goes right over their heads.
I'm betting on stupid.

(8,556 posts)That means that 75 percent of Colbert's people say they are not conservative at all. That's the real story.
I imagine most of Colbert's 'supporters' are fans of his show and think he's funny and thus told a pollster they would support him for that reason alone.

(10,960 posts)As the author of a post isolating those cross-tab numbers were from I feel obliged to jump in here because I really stared at the thing for a while to make sure before posting those numbers.
15% of all Americans who identify themselves as "very conservative" chose Colbert in the PPP poll. And 10% of somewhat conservative.
That's a pretty big anti-Romney protest vote.

(8,556 posts)But it still doesn't change my basic point. Those aren't very big numbers. Plenty of Colbert watchers are probably somewhat or very conservative. I think that's what accounts for that.
But you're right, there is a sizable anti-Romney contingent over there. But they will come around once he's the nominee because he will still look better to them than Obama will.

(22,457 posts)RIGHT WING friends of mine asked me why I watched Colbert because he was a Republican. They were 100% serious. They watched him because they thought he was a right wing commentator. They did not believe me until about a week later they texted me and said "OK, we get Colbert now, he is making fun of us."
This is a hard story to tell because most people do not believe it can be true.
