"Get a good job and be successful"
That's part A of the message from the GOP candidates when addressing people who are disadvantaged with unemployment or other govt assistance. They can look down on people who rely on food stamps or rent subsidies and tell them they too can hoist themselves up and find financial independence, if they just start down the road to a high paying job.
Part B of the GOP message acts to cut workers who earn "too much". From teachers and janitors to auto workers and firefighters, you've crossed a line from "good job" to "overpaid". I scream at the TV when I hear these contenders solve the nation's "entitlement problem" by starving out American poverty and the working poor through cuts in assitance, but once we pull ourselves up and get a job, it suddenly pays more than we deserve.
When it comes to punishing success, nobody can beat a Republican.
Personally, I don't think the Republicans have any intention of cultivating wealth among the poverty stricken. Their goal is a return to the day when a man could get a good shoeshine for a quarter.
