New York Times Editorial Board Calls for Biden to Step Aside

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/28/opinion/biden-election-debate-trump.html

As it stands, the president is engaged in a reckless gamble. There are Democratic leaders better equipped to present clear, compelling and energetic alternatives to a second Trump presidency. There is no reason for the party to risk the stability and security of the country by forcing voters to choose between Mr. Trump’s deficiencies and those of Mr. Biden. It’s too big a bet to simply hope Americans will overlook or discount Mr. Biden’s age and infirmity that they see with their own eyes.

Never seen that before.

If the race comes down to a choice between Mr. Trump and Mr. Biden, the sitting president would be this board’s unequivocal pick. That is how much of a danger Mr. Trump poses. But given that very danger, the stakes for the country and the uneven abilities of Mr. Biden, the United States needs a stronger opponent to the presumptive Republican nominee. To make a call for a new Democratic nominee this late in a campaign is a decision not taken lightly, but it reflects the scale and seriousness of Mr. Trump’s challenge to the values and institutions of this country and the inadequacy of Mr. Biden to confront him.

Trump was convicted on 34 counts on May 30th. In the past four weeks, how many journalists, pundits, and editorial boards have asked Trump, a convicted felon, to step aside?

I understand that many of them don't want Trump to win, but they sure haven't been terribly helpful for the most part. Meanwhile, I don't think a last minute replacement for Biden at this point would be very helpful.

to prop up another candidate. It takes a long time and a lot of money and planning to put together a presidential run.

Meanwhile, it was understandable that journalists would write about Biden's poor debate performance and express legitimate concern, but they could have waited a day or two before declaring en masse that Biden should redraw. The stark contrast between Biden on that debate stage and Biden in North Carolina the next day tells a different story than the ones they were writing.

They'll decide based on polls and fundraising. The problem is that those may be affected by newspaper of record opinions. Just think of the high regard with which some of the (self-professedly) richest most vocal fundraisers around here hold the NY Times opinon. If polls crater and the fundraisers put pressure, Biden won't make it to the convention. The NY Times is a canary in a coal mine on that. We'll see, sure, but real soon.

...and that this suggestion that Biden step down is about realpolitik, about accounting for (not the NYT's words) the stupid way the American public makes voting decisions.

They clearly state that they consider a Trump win a huge threat to the country.

Not calling on Trump to resign is simply knowing Trump, nor the Republican party, have a good side to appeal to for dropping out for the good of the country.

It would of course be better if they skipped over the expectations game and flat out called on Trump to resign too, just to make things more clear and definitive, but I think we all know that would be a futile gesture. Republicans would glory in being told Trump should withdraw by the NYT, so saying Trump should quit the race would be nothing more than preaching to the choir.

Donald Trump has proved himself to be a significant jeopardy to that democracy — an erratic and self-interested figure unworthy of the public trust. He systematically attempted to undermine the integrity of elections. His supporters have described, publicly, a 2025 agenda that would give him the power to carry out the most extreme of his promises and threats. If he is returned to office, he has vowed to be a different kind of president, unrestrained by the checks on power built into the American political system.

. . .

If the race comes down to a choice between Mr. Trump and Mr. Biden, the sitting president would be this board’s unequivocal pick. That is how much of a danger Mr. Trump poses.

"It doesn't get any worse than that! When the NY Times doesn't want you, it's bad. It's real bad".

How stupid. Keep your thoughts to yourself NYT!!!

It's one thing for Koffee Klatches to say this. It's another thing for the NYT to blast it. How moronic!!!

A bad debate performance is beyond the pale but being a 34 time convicted felon and rapist is just fine.

It's not necessarily going to be easier for another candidate to beat TSF in the November elections, so we're supposed to give up Biden's incumbency for a different "reckless gamble".

On the other hand the NYT probably does employ many people who will need to flee the country immediately if TSF wins, so I can understand why they might be jumpy...

What do they have to say about a criminal convicted of 34 felonies, not to mention someone who fomented an attempted coup d'etat against our country? Again, FUCK THEM.

I dropped my NY times subscription on inauguration day in 2021. They were more concerned with Biden wearing a rolex during inauguration than the insurrection that had just happened. That is bullshit. Posting just so the title of the article proves my point. It is not worth reading. Don't fucking subscribe to this piece of shit paper. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/22/fashion/mens-style/rolex-biden.html

They can go fuck off.

Tell the lying rapist felon to step down.

A sane country would be calling the felon to step down.

That's the problem. Neither of these guys are getting nominated by a "sane country", but rather by a heavily engineered primary system that only reflects the will of 10% of the country.

Mr. Biden has been an admirable president. Under his leadership, the nation has prospered and begun to address a range of long-term challenges, and the wounds ripped open by Mr. Trump have begun to heal. But the greatest public service Mr. Biden can now perform is to announce that he will not continue to run for re-election.

They could have given Biden the benefit of the doubt, that he wasn't up to par, that he was obviously under the weather. That trump did nothing but lie and Biden was prepared to debate but there wasn't a debate. He was blindsided. Thought you guys behind the scenes were supposed to not let that happen.
Honestly, I think any Democrat would have been blindsided, Biden was not at his best for sure but that was enough said, step down? Bullshit.

For our news media, it's all about ratings and trump delivers. why don't they pick apart everything that came out of the lying mouth of trump. That's what every editorial should be about. "I know Putins' dreams" not a whisper about that.

This was NOT a debate.

It is an absolute tragedy that trump is the republican nominee.

If he killed someone on 5th Avenue you wouldn't be calling for him to step down.

Fuck you.

You are a big part of the problem.

You helped cause this disaster.

You could have fought hard to stop trump, but you didn't.

You helped spread his lies.

You helped to "normalize" trump.

Just fuck off.

If Joe were just a head in a box he would get my vote.

Fuck you for aiding and abetting trump.
