(1,140 posts)I assume they have called for Trump to step aside in light of his recent convictions?
PatSeg
(49,740 posts)That should have been their response to his 34 convictions. Damn, this really sucks.
NoRethugFriends
(3,010 posts)They would ask me asking Biden to drop out because they don't want Trump to win. Asking Trump to drop out it's just a meaningless thing to posit.
PatSeg
(49,740 posts)Trump was convicted on 34 counts on May 30th. In the past four weeks, how many journalists, pundits, and editorial boards have asked Trump, a convicted felon, to step aside?
I understand that many of them don't want Trump to win, but they sure haven't been terribly helpful for the most part. Meanwhile, I don't think a last minute replacement for Biden at this point would be very helpful.

(65,097 posts)I'm sure some of its editorial writers must being taking tranquilizers right about now. I hope they fought like hell for this not to happen!
My son, who lives in NYC, tells me he is not surprised. I'll see him later and have a long conversation about it with him. He's a good Dem and a smart guy, but I need to find out why he is "not surprised."
PatSeg
(49,740 posts)Actually, I was surprised at some of the voices calling for Biden to redraw. I really expected better from people like Paul Krugman and Jonathan Alter. They should have taken those tranquilizers BEFORE they wrote their opinions. Talk about kneejerk reactions.
I don't know. Maybe some of them have always felt this way and the poor debate performance was a good excuse to say it out loud.
artemisia1
(793 posts)changing candidates is a legitimate discussion at this point. No disrespect to President Biden who is a thousand times that man that Trump is.
choie
(4,555 posts)This was ONE debate!! A poor performance I. One debate doesnt signify that Biden is unfit to be president! How ridiculous is that!
And many of these journalists have been around for a long time. They of all people should have known better.
PatSeg
(49,740 posts)to prop up another candidate. It takes a long time and a lot of money and planning to put together a presidential run.
Meanwhile, it was understandable that journalists would write about Biden's poor debate performance and express legitimate concern, but they could have waited a day or two before declaring en masse that Biden should redraw. The stark contrast between Biden on that debate stage and Biden in North Carolina the next day tells a different story than the ones they were writing.
TBF
(34,428 posts)because he does not get to be in charge of Joe's schedule.
Prairie Gates
(3,211 posts)Maybe you're right, but the New York Times saying it carries some weight.
TBF
(34,428 posts)"carries some weight"?
But you've neglected to address the subject of the other candidate with the 34 felonies. Care to tell us how you feel about that? Does that "carry weight" with you?
Prairie Gates
(3,211 posts)Now you know how I feel. I still think that the NY Times still functions as a paper opf record in the US, and that its editorial board opinion is a big deal, even if we disagree with its substance. The NY Times editorial board calling for a sitting President to step aside from his reelection bid is a big deal, even if you don't think so.
TBF
(34,428 posts)I've been reading it for years. I'm in Texas now, but I spent 15 years on the East Coast, working and living in Wash DC and NYC.
I had a lot of respect for both papers then. Now the Wash Post is owned by Bezos and the current family member running the NYTimes has a problem with Joe Biden.
You've told me how you feel about Trump, and that's fine - but you still didn't answer the question. Don't you feel like someone with 34 felonies should be questioned? Shouldn't Arthur question how Trump can be the nominee for the republicans?
Prairie Gates
(3,211 posts)There is actually quite a bit of questioning of Trump in the editorial.
I don't know why you're making this about my opinion.
TBF
(34,428 posts)and you did write the OP so folks will respond ...
Stock market is down 10 points today so maybe we're both a little correct. Investors aren't feeling too happy either way. Hopefully the work President Biden has done the past 4 years will be enough to convince them (and independents) that throwing it back in the hands of Trump is not the best thing for the future of this country.

(878 posts)Do most people nowadays decide something based on a newspaper editorial board's opinions? This isn't the twentieth century anymore.
Prairie Gates
(3,211 posts)It's an information point, but one that carries some weight. Still does.
orange jar
(878 posts)but more so that people nowadays don't trust/hold news agencies in as high of a regard as they used to. We'll see what happens, I guess, but I don't expect Biden or his allies to listen to the NYT on this (nor should he, imo)
Prairie Gates
(3,211 posts)They'll decide based on polls and fundraising. The problem is that those may be affected by newspaper of record opinions. Just think of the high regard with which some of the (self-professedly) richest most vocal fundraisers around here hold the NY Times opinon. If polls crater and the fundraisers put pressure, Biden won't make it to the convention. The NY Times is a canary in a coal mine on that. We'll see, sure, but real soon.

(15,909 posts)...and that this suggestion that Biden step down is about realpolitik, about accounting for (not the NYT's words) the stupid way the American public makes voting decisions.
They clearly state that they consider a Trump win a huge threat to the country.
Not calling on Trump to resign is simply knowing Trump, nor the Republican party, have a good side to appeal to for dropping out for the good of the country.
It would of course be better if they skipped over the expectations game and flat out called on Trump to resign too, just to make things more clear and definitive, but I think we all know that would be a futile gesture. Republicans would glory in being told Trump should withdraw by the NYT, so saying Trump should quit the race would be nothing more than preaching to the choir.

(24,690 posts)It's not necessarily going to be easier for another candidate to beat TSF in the November elections, so we're supposed to give up Biden's incumbency for a different "reckless gamble".
On the other hand the NYT probably does employ many people who will need to flee the country immediately if TSF wins, so I can understand why they might be jumpy...

(27,313 posts)They could have given Biden the benefit of the doubt, that he wasn't up to par, that he was obviously under the weather. That trump did nothing but lie and Biden was prepared to debate but there wasn't a debate. He was blindsided. Thought you guys behind the scenes were supposed to not let that happen.
Honestly, I think any Democrat would have been blindsided, Biden was not at his best for sure but that was enough said, step down? Bullshit.
For our news media, it's all about ratings and trump delivers. why don't they pick apart everything that came out of the lying mouth of trump. That's what every editorial should be about. "I know Putins' dreams" not a whisper about that.
This was NOT a debate.
