MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) A Dane County circuit judge plans to take almost two months to decide whether or not to strike down Wisconsins new photo I-D law for voting.
Judge Richard Niess (nees) heard arguments this morning in a lawsuit filed by the states League of Women Voters which challenges the I-D law. A decision is expected on March 9th.
The league says the new requirements will disenfranchise a number of voters including minorities. The state disputes that, and has asked that the suit be dropped.
Republicans approved the voter I-D law last year, saying it will fight voter fraud. Its scheduled to take effect for the first time statewide on February 21st in local primaries throughout Wisconsin.
The American Civil Liberties Union and the N-Double-A-C-P also have lawsuits pending against the voter I-D law.
The honarable Judge Niess was appointed by Gov. Doyle (d) in 2004 - - http://judgepedia.org/index.php/Richard_Niess
