CNN's John King asked Romney why he refuses to release his tax returns before the SC vote tomorrow?"Because I want to make sure that I beat President Obama," Romney said, complaining that Democrats make hay out of every personal issue in a "drip, drip, drip" fashion.
Gingrich wasn't satisfied and asked Romney, "If there's nothing in there, why not release it?"
King pursued the issue further, pointing out that Romney's father, George, was the first presidential candidate to release tax returns and offered 12 years' worth when he ran in 1968. Would the younger Romney offer up multiple years of returns?
"Maybe," Romney said, laughing.
After pausing to let the audience finish its jeers, Romney said, "I'm not going to apologize for being successful." He added, "I didn't inherit money from my parents. I worked hard."

What is in Mitt's tax returns?
When Mitt Romney's father, George, ran for office in 1968, he released 12 years of tax returns, setting a groundbreaking precedent for decades of presidential candidates. During last night's debate, when asked point-blank if he would follow in his father's footsteps and release many years' worth of his own tax returns, what was Romney's answer? An awkward "maybe."
Romney recently admitted to paying a tax rate of "closer to 15 percent"a rate much lower than most Americans pay. And as CEO of Bain Capital, Romney had millions of dollars set up in investments in funds in offshore tax havens.
So why won't he release his tax returns so South Carolinia voters can be more well informed in casting their ballot tomorrow? "Because I want to make sure that I beat President Obama."
Why is Romney trying so desperately to hide the truth? Voters deserve to know the facts. Watch our video, and decide for yourself what Romney is trying to hide.

(3,427 posts)Or at least he's pretending he doesn't get it. The issue is not that he's very wealthy. I don't hold that against him. The issue is that our rigged system allows him to pay a lower tax rate than middle-class workers, AND he's asking us to make sacrifices in education, health care and Social Security so he can give more huge tax cuts to people like himself.

(85,977 posts). . . Romney's defense of his own wealth contrasted against the President's defense of the American people's income and financial security.

(576 posts)Is what he should have said. Anyone left in the race should release theirs now (Gingrich I think did, maybe). Because that will put pressure on Mitt to do the same. Mitt Co. doesnt want him to release them because it will serve as a point of attack for Newt and Santorum. In order to cover that fact, Mitt says he is trying to "beat Obama." Umm, ok? because Apr-Nov isnt enough time to attack on the tax returns? Clearly the dems can still attack him on his returns. But he doesnt want republicans to have that same option.
