Will people here take that to heart?
How many posts have there been of people saying they won't listen to CNN, or won't listen to MSNBC In the daytime, or won't listen to some evening hosts, because they said something, or had a guest who said something that they disagreed with?

Still love them though, even when I think they're very wrong about some things.

(49,086 posts)but you can't subscribe to them for their political philosophies because we really don't know what those are. We know they tend to bring up certain issues we are also focused on and can have a unique hard hitting way of shining a light on corruption or whatever.
Even with politicans I often see people suggesting that we know how a politician feels on an issue when it seems clear to me that in some cases at least the politician is only following constituent popular opinion. We shouldn't conflate the two if we are trying to understand politics.
I will leave out the fringier elements for now (Dennis Kucinich etc) who have a different tactic altogether.

I dont need to listen to people whose values are the complete opposite of mine and who actually want a different outcome.
I want some semblance of income equality. They dont. I want healthcare for all. They dont. I want free food for all hungry people. They dont. They want low taxes. I dont (unless by some magic, everyone is healthy and prospering with and we have an excess).
If were not even going in the same direction, why do I listen to them? And once they start lying about facts, they are useless to me.

(71,024 posts)Trump. MSNBC had terrible ratings of late and there is a reason...I used to watch multiple shows...now I don't CNN is in the toilet...I can get that kind of coverage on Fox...no thanks. And the reason is ultimately...they are lying to the American people by not telling the truth about Trump...but acting like Democrats' behavior and Republican behavior are equivalent...it is not.

(28,833 posts)Call it opposition research. It's rather eye-opening and provides some insight into how they think and act. The self-delusion they exhibit can be pretty amazing. Read the comments on any article about Trump's trials and be prepared to wonder at the human mind's ability to detach itself from reality.
it also reinforces my belief that we're never going to change the minds of some and that we just have to find a way to outvote them in November.

(8,513 posts)I don't yell. I don't argue. I do discuss. I respectfully listen to what someone's priorities are that cause them to support people I don't support. I sincerely want to understand why they have the views they have. Shutting someone down gets us nowhere. I've found that if we can get to a point where we're actually having a conversation, they sometimes will also listen to why I have the views I have. Nobody wants to listen to someone who makes them think that we think they're stupid.

And I am retired from acareer working at the county mental health clinic. I know the importance of listening -- even to someone you disagree with. Especially those on your same team.

When I was young, patience was not one of my virtues. In fact, I can't remember many "virtues" from that era, except that Iwas sincere in believing my generation could and would solve all of the world's problems. Holy cow!
Since then, I have learned that instant gratification rarely comes ..... there are, for example, two cases I worked on that took twenty years for resolution. That with patience, the smallest of creatures can climb the highest of mountains.
In the ring, in 329 fights, I learned not to be over-confident. Yes, I did! Yet I can say with 100% certainty that we can have Joe Biden win, if we all work together towards a common goal.

(5,370 posts)I haven't watched it in ages, and am trying to get the husband to turn it off. It's not news, it's endless opinion and filler. MSNBC was ridiculous when I turned it on to learn about Trump's shooting. I switched it to CBS, which had a special report. Sane, sober, amd with analysis from an ex-SS when I turned it on. That's what I want, not silliness.
I put the NYT in my rearview mirror after the Judith Miller debacle. Hundreds of thousands died for nothing in Iraq, and no one has been held accountable, including the NYT. Philly Inquirer, LA Times, and wire services. Also, the Guardian. I'm into news, not opinion. I try my best to skip the opinion, especially lately.

President Biden is talking to the American people, all of them, not just Democrats. I agree with what he is saying, America, needs to wake up and see the clear and present danger of trump, the foreign actors he has joined forces with. and the domestic terrorist, MAGA, that we are facing. They need to see the clear and present danger to our democracy because we are holding on by a thread.
I will not listen to one pundit, politician or mega donor that says Biden needs to step down.

(6,512 posts)We cannot have a conversation. To watch them is to surrender valuable living time. They are being paid for their time, we are not.
The comunication is all one way. They tell us, we listen. It is unequal. A watcher/ listener becomes frustrated. Frustration leads to anxiety and a logical reaction is to stop/watching. This is a good reaction. It saves our valuable time, decreases anxiety and frees us up to pay attention to family, friends, neighbors. If enough people turn them off, they do eventually take notice because it affects profit.
The format is cheap because the shows are aimed at making a profit. Having talking heads on camera used to be considered bad form . These shows are mostly all talking heads. Very old fashioned.
Sure I can do an online comment but that is probably just tension relief for me with no guarantee it will be taken to heart by the grand communicators.

(16,595 posts)How many times have we noticed their agendas? They are corporate media, so of course they have a slant. They sling a lot of bullshit. It isnt about certain guests; its that the totality of their guest list is from a small slice of the punditry. The quest for ratings above all else means actual journalism suffers. Thats why I tune it out.

(34,396 posts)I used to love the back and forth with liars and cable news hosts who slightly enabled con artists like trump.
Unfortunately, I can't do that anymore because it makes me physically ill. Listening to bullshit raises my blood pressure and causes extreme nausea or worse.
However, those of you that can do it safely and without contributing to their ratings should do so. Obviously we need to know what everyone is saying.
As far as the bubble of information that I receive--it's not like that for me. I don't automatically swallow whatever is told to me. I don't agree with everything that is mentioned, even on my favorite shows.
Out of habit, I usually Google / fact check most new information that is presented or just take it with a grain of salt. The one exception to that is sometimes posts that I come across on DU where I react first before getting all the facts. But even then, at least one person in the thread will set the record straight.

I am even friends with a man I consider to be a (unfortunately very successful) very dangerous right wing strategist and fundraiser since the Reagan days. His name is Richard Viguerie, and he is a very smart far right nut case if ever there was one.
