"we need to get out of our silos, where we only listen to those with whom we agree....."

Will people here take that to heart?

How many posts have there been of people saying they won't listen to CNN, or won't listen to MSNBC In the daytime, or won't listen to some evening hosts, because they said something, or had a guest who said something that they disagreed with?

but you can't subscribe to them for their political philosophies because we really don't know what those are. We know they tend to bring up certain issues we are also focused on and can have a unique hard hitting way of shining a light on corruption or whatever.

Even with politicans I often see people suggesting that we know how a politician feels on an issue when it seems clear to me that in some cases at least the politician is only following constituent popular opinion. We shouldn't conflate the two if we are trying to understand politics.

I will leave out the fringier elements for now (Dennis Kucinich etc) who have a different tactic altogether.

If I watch a program, it will be something to educate myself, such as electric cars vs gasoline engines … which is worse for the environment? Or how economists think we can extend social security or how to grow the economy without blowing up inflation.
I don’t need to listen to people whose values are the complete opposite of mine and who actually want a different outcome.
I want some semblance of income equality. They don’t. I want healthcare for all. They don’t. I want free food for all hungry people. They don’t. They want low taxes. I don’t (unless by some magic, everyone is healthy and prospering with and we have an excess).
If we’re not even going in the same direction, why do I listen to them? And once they start lying about facts, they are useless to me.

Call it opposition research. It's rather eye-opening and provides some insight into how they think and act. The self-delusion they exhibit can be pretty amazing. Read the comments on any article about Trump's trials and be prepared to wonder at the human mind's ability to detach itself from reality.

it also reinforces my belief that we're never going to change the minds of some and that we just have to find a way to outvote them in November.

Nobody wants to listen to someone who makes them think that we think they're stupid.

When I was young, patience was not one of my virtues. In fact, I can't remember many "virtues" from that era, except that Iwas sincere in believing my generation could and would solve all of the world's problems. Holy cow!

Since then, I have learned that instant gratification rarely comes ..... there are, for example, two cases I worked on that took twenty years for resolution. That with patience, the smallest of creatures can climb the highest of mountains.

In the ring, in 329 fights, I learned not to be over-confident. Yes, I did! Yet I can say with 100% certainty that we can have Joe Biden win, if we all work together towards a common goal.

I put the NYT in my rearview mirror after the Judith Miller debacle. Hundreds of thousands died for nothing in Iraq, and no one has been held accountable, including the NYT. https://apnews.com/article/biden-trump-shooting-election-2024-704592d02c3421a767112f0bf6d25eb9

President Biden is talking to the American people, all of them, not just Democrats. I agree with what he is saying, America, needs to wake up and see the clear and present danger of trump, the foreign actors he has joined forces with. and the domestic terrorist, MAGA, that we are facing. They need to see the clear and present danger to our democracy because we are holding on by a thread.

We cannot have a conversation. To watch them is to surrender valuable living time. They are being paid for their time, we are not.

The comunication is all one way. They tell us, we listen. It is unequal. A watcher/ listener becomes frustrated. Frustration leads to anxiety and a logical reaction is to stop/watching. This is a good reaction. It saves our valuable time, decreases anxiety and frees us up to pay attention to family, friends, neighbors. If enough people turn them off, they do eventually take notice because it affects profit.

The format is cheap because the shows are aimed at making a profit. Having talking heads on camera used to be considered bad form . These shows are mostly all talking heads. Very old fashioned.

Sure I can do an online comment but that is probably just tension relief for me with no guarantee it will be taken to heart by the “grand communicators.”

How many times have we noticed their agendas? They are corporate media, so of course they have a slant. They sling a lot of bullshit. It isn’t about certain guests; it’s that the totality of their guest list is from a small slice of the punditry. The quest for ratings above all else means actual journalism suffers. That’s why I tune it out.

This place here is a bit of an echo chamber, true, but open forums don’t really work. The wingnuts drive everybody away.

I listen and read a variety of news sources. Corporate media are not amongst them, and I am better for it. Corporate media are about
profit, not informing the public.
Also, while in the car, I often listen to am radio, just to see what the wing nuts are talking about. It is a sewer. It is not the left that refuse to listen to other viewpoints. Maybe you should scold the other side. Good luck with that.

It’s not our fault the oligarchs scooped up nearly every news outlet and have been relentlessly determined to manipulate us with manufactured news and propaganda. The fourth estate has failed us and no longer report news. Instead they are working to create news. I am under no obligation to trust an entity that has proven itself to be untrustworthy.

I used to love the back and forth with liars and cable news hosts who slightly enabled con artists like trump.

Unfortunately, I can't do that anymore because it makes me physically ill. Listening to bullshit raises my blood pressure and causes extreme nausea or worse.

However, those of you that can do it safely and without contributing to their ratings should do so. Obviously we need to know what everyone is saying.

As far as the bubble of information that I receive--it's not like that for me. I don't automatically swallow whatever is told to me. I don't agree with everything that is mentioned, even on my favorite shows.

Out of habit, I usually Google / fact check most new information that is presented or just take it with a grain of salt. The one exception to that is sometimes posts that I come across on DU where I react first before getting all the facts. But even then, at least one person in the thread will set the record straight.

But yes, listen to what their opinions are, and on what they base them. It's the best way to build our counter arguments.

They do exactly the same with us, and was told this by none other than Richard Viguerie, who is the Prince of Darkness as far as politics goes. When I talk to him, Richard listens attentively. He then tells me why I'm full of shit, but he registers every word I say, and forgets none of it.

I have an allergy to maggat and other cult follower ideas and rationalizations. Just their words put me in a state of revulsion and disgust.
I think I had been exposed to way too much of it growing up in the south 3/4 of a century ago. Still fighting the civil war.

Northern California has been my home for over 50 years. I take some measure of comfort to the degree that element exist here,t I'm not surrounded by it.

I have friends in Congress with whom I disagree on certain current issues. Some have requested I keep our conversations private, and I always respect such requests.

I am even friends with a man I consider to be a (unfortunately very successful) very dangerous right wing strategist and fundraiser since the Reagan days. His name is Richard Viguerie, and he is a very smart far right nut case if ever there was one. He is, much to my consternation, also a very personable, friendly guy, whom I usually see once a year at New Year's. Last year was the first time in over 20 years I didn't see him due to family issues (his, not mine). He'll be 91 this year, and he's as sharp and as active as ever.

My social media has zero MAGAts. I moved to a city without MAGAts 30 years ago. I don't have MAGAt friends. I don't see * signs unless I go miles and miles out of town. Nowadays, I can barely stand to watch the news, read the newspaper, or, frankly, read DU.

The only MAGAts I've got in my life are relatives: my Dad, and my Aunt/Uncle/Cousins. I avoid the latter and I try not to discuss politics with my Dad. He's 88 and has rejected every argument against Republics made by his 4 flaming Liberal children and their offspring and has since 1980.
