Romney has given his family foundation $9.5 million. $4.7 million of that went to the Mormon Church

http://philanthropy.com/article/Romney-Gave-His-Family-Fund/130420/

Mitt Romney, a contender for the Republican presidential nomination, has put a total of $9.5-million into his family foundation from 1999 through 2010, the most recent year for which data are available.

Mr. Romney is estimated to be worth at least $200-million, but he has not released his tax returns, so it’s hard to tell how much of his income went to charities beyond the family fund.

During that time, the foundation, called the Tyler Charitable Foundation, made grants of $7-million, most of it going to the Mormon Church, otherwise known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Grants totaling $4.7-million were made to the church, with the largest grants in 2008 ($1.8-million) and 2003 ($1.9-million). The foundation awarded $525,000 to Brigham Young University, the Mormon university that is Mr. Romney’s alma mater.

I wonder if that was enough to pay for all those "I'm a Mormon" ads we've been seeing as Romney runs for president...

Hmm. Just found a news story saying that the Mormon Church spent $4.6 million on those ads last year:

In 2011 the Mormon church spent about $4.6 million to run the spots 7,899 times, according to data from the Campaign Media Analysis Group, which tracks political ad spending. Church representatives say the campaign is not politically motivated despite its heavy rotation in a Presidential primary race that features two Mormon candidates.

limit their contributions to their churches. That is why they blather that charity should be only willing, and that churches should do it all.

Isn't 10% kind of a standard amount? A more generous interpretation would be to give whatever you have in excess of need. Since he "earns" a paltry 300K+/year, that $200 million sitting there in the Cayman's doing nothing for the American economy seems life the definition of "in excess of need."
