I'm afraid I have to admit that I am glad my dear wife passed before what is happening now. She grew up in a blue-collar conservative household, but as long as we were together (>50 yrs), she was a virulent progressive. She was a heavy user of DU, and got me started in 2016.
One quick anecdote. A few decades ago, the KKK was staging a rally at the entrance to our small rural town, near the diner. We happened to pass them, in their hoods and all, as we were out doing our shopping. She was instantly half out of the now open car window, while we were in motion, screaming at them, using some very bad words. The only thing that kept her in the car was me holding desperately onto her waistband.
She was devastated when Hillary lost, and I personally believe that may have been the beginning of the downturn in her health. She was ultimately finished by a combination of Cancer, Sepsis and hospital acquired Covid. A little under 2 years ago.
As I said, I am glad she never had to be here to see what is happening now. She got to live out her life in her own home, without a worry about housing, food or economic security.
I guess I will undertake to deal with those issues as they come up.

(34,536 posts)I lost my mother 2 years ago (almost to the day - Dec. 1st is the anniversary of her passing). She never left her small town area -- but she had been in an apartment, so we moved her to an assisted living facility in the country when it was time per her hospice orders. She was still fairly lucid and really seemed to enjoy the animals on the property. She would NOT have enjoyed Trump's resurgence and I'm feeling the same way, happy that she lived out her years with her daughters (and granddaughters) taking care of her and still had her modest savings account. Everyone should be able to have dignity, and who knows what it will be like the next few years now that we will be back to chaos.

(17,112 posts)I'm very sorry for your loss. These traumas cannot help but impact the health of some of us. I developed some issues in late 2020 that I thought were temporary but are still with me. Our entire nation hasn't had time to absorb and process everything. It just keeps coming.
My father passed away in 2011 and my mother (thank god she is still here) and I have spent a lot of time wondering what he would have said, thought, advised... But part of me is glad he is not here to see this too. Very mixed emotions. Selfishly, I do wish he was here because he probably would have some ideas. But he loved this country and knew history, and I think it would have disturbed him profoundly.

I'm sorry she passed but at least it was while a wonderful Democratic President is in office.
I'm 67 y.o. and I feel like my heart has been broken. I mean I literally feel like I'm in the middle of a breakup. I've been crying when I see pictures or clips of V.P. Harris....
Thank God we have each other here on DU...

(4,410 posts)My husband passed in April of 2017, so he didn't have to witness all the ways TheSickMF damaged this nation. It is my only consolation to losing such a wonderful partner.

So often I think of my parents who died in 2006 and 2018 and I'm glad none of this happened during their lifetimes. I don't know how they would have dealt with this insanity.

(18,166 posts)There were many other factors that led up to him doing this. But when we all came back home for it, mom also told us that he was very concerned about the future of the United States of America and the reelection of Richard Nixon. Maybe he wouldve done it no matter who was inaugurated; but there was definitely a vibration amongst us in those days that is similar to what Im feeling now.

(4,396 posts)A WWII veteran medic who saw first hand who the nazies were. If he had been around to see OUR nazies proudly parading in our cities it would have given him a heart attack. My father was a repub his whole life... but in the ways of old time repubs... strong on defense and self independence..but never let anyone he met go without, nor any critter go hungry. He was a dem at heart, and these days would have taken the heart out of him.
I have been so glad he's no longer here to see this, while also mourning him today as much as I did when he died. I miss his wisdom and advice, both of which I find myself in need of hearing these days.

(3,022 posts)Being female and experiencing our loss of personal power, being kicked to the curb by the courts and by at least half of the electorate so it seems, is an extremely painful experience. Im so sorry that your wife passed and that you had to witness her struggle. You are not wrong. This final assault on women is something she did not need to experience. The assault was a massive kick to the heart and millions of us walk around every day as though .nothing happened! Sending love to you and your wife for being such strong , brave souls. 💗🙏🏼

My dear Mom - one of the last Democrats in my immediate family, died in 2022 and she saw the first SHitler regime. I'm glad she will not have to witness the second one. I know that feeling.
