Sacramento City Animal Shelter pleads for help-“Name Your Price” adoption special

Sacramento City Animal Shelter pleads for help

There seems to be an unexplained epidemic rise in the number of animals at the Sacramento City Shelter. Despite the extraordinary increase in adoptions at the end of the year, over 170 dogs sit waiting for new homes. All are stray or surrendered by their owners. Despite requests for help from rescue organizations, the supply exceeds the demand or capacity. Rescue partners are working feverishly to assist in saving the animals, but the real solution lies with our community. Sacramento residents are urged to consider adopting a shelter pet versus buying from a breeder. Pet sales on Craig’s List serve as competition for shelter pets and often, unsuspecting adopters have no idea what they are getting.

In an effort to encourage shelter pet adoptions, the Sacramento City Shelter took a drastic step yesterday, offering a “Name Your Price” adoption special. Adopters are encouraged to make a donation they can afford when adopting a shelter pet. All animals come spayed or neutered, micro-chipped, licensed and vaccinated. Free ID tags are offered to anyone who needs one, along with free micro-chipping to anyone who may have lost a pet that ended up at the city shelter. Incredible outreach efforts are under way to educate Sacramento residents on the value of adopting a shelter pet.

We are seeking the media’s assistance in spreading the word. The alternative is euthanizing for space and we simply do not want to do that. It is a new generation of sheltering in Sacramento and the only way to save lives is to enlist the support of our community.

The Sacramento City Shelter is located at:

2127 Front Street

However when you have AKC fighting against regulations on breeding in state after state it doesn't look promising. Then there are the rules on the books but not enough people to enforce them. Sadly it is the animals that pay the price. I am not against breeding if done correctly. I have 4 Newfoundland dogs and would hate to think of a day this breed is nonexistent. However there needs to be something like Germany has on breeding AND ENFORCED! Also ALL breeders need to take back any of their dogs at anytime the owners don't want/can't keep them. None should ever end up in a pound. Alas this is not often the case in America.

many litters per year many times also. I would like to see the rules, oversight and regulations extremely strict. Did not help when G W cut most of the FDA positions and there are only enough inspectors to visit Mills once every three years if even . ALL Mills need a cease and desist NOW. This is the Petition we need. The animals should be placed also. There is also no reason for imports of breeds except rarely. Breeding is many times just a cash cow for people.
Spay and neuter should be enforced more and provided at a reasonable cost also.
I have a Neufie-X stray-rescue-from abuse situation.

But you have to have the right kind of stable home to take one.
