On Fox News Sunday this morning, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) told Chris Wallace that Were going to do everything we can to make sure the Keystone Pipeline is approved. When Wallace pressed him whether Republican leadership would make the pipeline a condition for extending the payroll tax holiday, Boehner admitted, We may, adding (several times) that All options are on the table. Proponents of the pipeline have dwarfed opponents in lobbying spending, inflated the actual effect it will have on job creation, and spread various myths designed to circumvent its environmental impact.

(85,989 posts)He didn't learn his lesson. We can bury the pipeline for good, if he wants to put it front and center. In fact, we can have a debate about our nation's energy needs and the importance and efficacy of renewable forms and other alternatives.

(17,644 posts)The proposed extension of the payroll tax holiday is intended to prevent a hit to our anemic economic recovery. The White House and members of Congress are selling the end of the holiday as a tax increase on the middle class. In fact, this Social Security payroll tax is actually an investment into ones retirement account. Promoting continued reduced payment into Social Security is the same as telling folks to borrow from their retirement and spend the money now.
Shame on any citizen who buys into the political rhetoric that the opponents of extending this underfunding of future security just want to increase tax rates for the middle class. Greater shame on those politicians who make that claim. Similarly, replacing the billions of dollars (approximately $110 billion/year) that dont come to Social Security from workers paychecks by funds the government has to borrow to cover its huge deficit is bad policy. Surely there are better initiatives to support economic growth.

(17,644 posts)a doctor fix is absolutely necessary. However, if done properly it can be not only self-funding, but also could save Medicare $50 billion or more per year.

"He's holding the American people hostage to Big Oil. Disgusting."
....he's talking shit. I mean, all Boehner has left is bluster. How exactly does he plan to implement this strategy?
The current plan was officially rejected. Congress has to take up the payroll tax cut and all he has is nonsensical threats.
Still, it's a good time for the Republicans to be seen as protecting the interest of Big Oil over the interests of the majority of Americans. Congress' approval is heading toward zero. LOL!

(5,417 posts)One set of books is for the IRS, following IRS rules and regulations.
A second set of books is following GAAP or IFRS rules and regulations.
The goal is to minimize the income reported to the IRS, and maximize the income reported to the SEC. This is not illegal, and is quite common. The IRS and GAAP/IFRS all have different rules and regulations, so in some cases keeping one set of books and following all rules might be difficult or impossible.

(24,407 posts)Why does something have to be tied to something else important? Why can't people just introduce legislation that we can debate and have a good clean UP-OR-DOWN VOTE on? I'm getting sick and tired of all of this "hostage-taking". I know that tying disparate pieces of legislation together has been happening forever and both parties have done it for various reasons but it's getting really old and stupid, especially since it's practically become SOP for the Republicans in Congress as a vehicle for stuffing necessary bills (i.e. appropriations) with "poison pills" that they KNOW would NEVER be passed on their own merits. If the Republicans think that they have to tie the approval of the pipeline to a payroll tax cut extension, then perhaps they don't have as strong an argument for the pipeline as they think they do. Additionally, they haven't been paying attention. President Obama didn't shut the deal down permanently but he (correctly) refused to approve it on the Repubs' timeline and without addressing pertinent environmental concerns first- not to mention that Nebraska REPUBLICANS had issues with it as well. He also left the door wide open for Keystone XL to re-apply, which I believe they are going to, so it seems as though the Republicans just want to ram this down our throats (sound familiar?) for the benefit of their buddies in the oil industry.
