Romney: "I'm proud of the fact that I pay a lot of taxes."

8:18 p.m.: Mitt Romney on his tax returns, which will be released tomorrow: "No surprises."

The former Massachusetts governor pivoted quickly to tax policy, not his own returns. It was a mighty effort to avoid the gaffes on this topic that marked the last debate.

But Romney made sure to tamp down expectations about his own taxes.

"Is it entirely legal and fair? Absolutely," Romney said. "I'm proud of the fact that I pay a lot of taxes."
